Customizing page themes/colors

I need help with the Sorbet theme. I’m only going to have 4 pages on my site and want each page to have a different color dot that shows up on the top of each page’s design and then corresponds to the same color dot that displays up in the header. I want to designate the symbol each dot/page receives, too. I cannot figure out how to do this. Can you help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The way Sorbet works is that it makes heavy use of Post Formats, which you can read about here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/

The icons and colors appearing at the top of the posts relate to the various post formats; there isn’t an easy way to replace the icons with your own images and link the colors to pages instead.

It’s probably possible to do something like what you’re after using CSS, but I’m not sure I entirely understand what you’d like to do. Could you provide one very specific example of what you’re envisioning? That might better help me know how to help. :)

    Hello,

So my site will be a website with 4 static pages. I do not intend to use it as a blog site (I never intend to write any “posts”). I also don’t want any widgets. I just don’t need them.

I would like each of the 4 pages to have a their own color and symbol in the page topper…the line with the icon button in the middle of it that tops the text block. And I want each of the 4 page buttons to be located in the right corner of the masthead so, for example, when I click the blue gear button in the masthead, it will take me to the page that has the blue line and gear button in the middle of it. When I click the green star icon button, it will take me to the page that has the green line and star button in the middle of it.

Right now, this is what the buttons and pages look like:

There are three icon buttons in the masthead: a darker blue one with 3 short horizontal lines centered in it and when I scroll over it, it says “Menu.” When I click on it, a same color blue bar drops down from underneath the masthead and the names of my 4 pages are displayed across the center of it.

The next button is lighter blue, has a gear on it and says “Widgets.” When I click on it, a bar of the same color drops down from under the masthead and the word “Contact” is diplayed on the left side of it.

The third button is lime green, has a magnifying glass and says “Search.” When I click on it, a lime green bar drops down from under the masthead and there’s a search bar (I don’t need a search bar on my site).

All of my pages have a blue line and icon button with a “Page” symbol centered in the button.

Does this help you imagine what I want to accomplish?

  • Hi there,

You can use CSS to target each individual page and change its color — so that the colors on each page are different.

The icons you’re talking about control different aspects of the theme — one expands the menu, one expands the widget area, and one is a search bar. You can certainly change the colors on them, and you can also hide them.

However, I think you’d be better off with a different theme for what you want to do. Reason being, most themes display the menu across the top without a toggle button that expands it. With a visible menu, you could replace the menu links to your specific pages with icons like you’re talking about. With Sorbet, this would be tough to do, because those icons aren’t related to the pages at all.

Here are a few themes with full-width templates like Sorbet, but with menus across the top without the toggle:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/fiore/

Does that all make sense? Let me know what you think!

This makes perfect sense and I’m already heading in this direction. Thank you very much!
