Customizing sidebar question

  Ok, my theme already comes with stuff in the sidebar, so when I try and place a widget it just appears on top of something else. I tried clearing all the code (is it php?) by editing the sidebar in the woothemes menu – hoping to be able to start again and start adding widgets from scratch, but now my page wont display anything. I did save the php code luckily. I just a blank page so I can start adding my own widgets…hope I’m explaining this properly. I’m a noob to wordpress as you can probably tell.
