Customizing the background image of my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I currently have the free plan with WordPress for my blog. I selected an image for my background image for my blog site but it doesn’t show. What is the reason for this? My separate header image shows but not the background. I kind of wanted it to be a tiled background but maybe due to having the free plan I have limited options? Or is it because I chose a free customized template?

My second question is regarding how my blog posts appear on my page. Before a featured blog post or posts would appear as a preview and one would have to click more to read the full blog post. Now a blog post appears as full written post. How can I make it so that it is like a preview post?

    Thank you,
    Sophia

    Hi @shaikhsophia417.

The majority of the themes at WordPress.com allow you to customize the background of your blog by either uploading an image or selecting a color.

Can you tell me how did you try to save the custom background?

Please follow the steps in the below link to set up a custom background from your site’s customizer.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-backgrounds/

Also, for your featured blog posts appearing with the full blog post, there is a Content Option. Content Options allow you to quickly modify how your content is displayed in some themes.
You need to choose between a full post or an excerpt for the blog and archive page.

    Customizer: Content Options

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Always ready to help.
    Thank you.
    Kind Regards.
    Alok.

    Hi,

Thank you for your response and the links for the tutorials and guide for both my inquiries. However, under the customized for the background image I tried to follow the steps but I still see no background. What I do is go to colours and backgrounds I click on select image and I pick my image and then I click publish. I see no background image. Strangely enough though I can see a bit of it at the top above my header image and that’s about it.

For the preview posts for some reason I do not see an option for content options. I don’t understand why…this is strange but that option is not to be seen.

    Thank you,
    Sophia

    Hi Sophia,

I can see you are using ‘Sketch’ theme, and it has custom background feature.

Even when I tried, uploaded custom background image is not reflecting for sketch theme. When I tried doing same for few other themes which have Custom Background feature, image is reflecting at the background.

It could be some issue with ‘Sketch’ theme or some other settings we might be missing which are specific for this theme. Let me tag this thread for staff assistance, someone from staff will suggest on this issue.

Meanwhile if you wish, you can check other themes which have Custom Background feature.

Hi Sophia, @sachintawade stands correct here. It must be some issue with the theme for both the custom background and the featured post excerpt settings.

    Kind Regards.

  • Hi there,

As you can see from the following screenshot, the background image is correctly displayed on that theme:

If you’re viewing that site from a device with a smaller screen (a laptop, tablet, or even a phone) you might not be able to see the background image.

    Hi,

Thank you for your response and assistance. Upon checking on my laptop the background does appear although you can still not see the full pic it is a coffee cup and a notebook and pen. Maybe I should make the tile smaller but I’m not sure how.
However, this will do for now. I’m happy at least the background shows.

Also I had asked another question too. If you can please kindly help me with that I will appreciate it. I want to change the way the posts appear on my blog site so that the full article does not show up and only the preview. I was told to go to customized option and click content options but for some strange reason I do not see this option.

    Pls assist.

    Thanks,
    Sophia

  • This particular theme is designed more for a portfolio than for blogging, so it may not have the excerpt option.

    These do though:

Also noting, as background images are always going to be covered by text, often by a block with a background color, too. If it’s important to be able to view a large image, I recommend bringing it to the foreground instead. Otherwise, even if you make the picture a little smaller, you’ve got to remember that different sized screens will cover up different amounts of the image.
