Are you referring to this site on the free plan http://shaunavonhighschoolclassof1970.wordpress.com/
The set up for the Karuna theme instructions are here http://shaunavonhighschoolclassof1970.wordpress.com/
What exactly do you mean by customization? Advanced customization options ie. custom design via CSS editing are available only in the Premium and Business plans. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Custom CSS https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/ is part of Custom Design https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/, which is a feature of the WordPress.com Premium and WordPress.com Business plans. https://wordpress.com/plans

You can use the Customizer to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings, from your Custom Header Image to widgets and more. You can access the Customizer from any page or post on your site: just go to the action bar in the bottom-right corner of the screen and click Customize. https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

Yes, I’m referring to the site http://shaunavonhighschoolclassof1970.wordpress.com/
The problem I’m having is as follows: I tused the Customizer to change the header image, the header and base fonts and background colour of the Karuna theme, and everything looks good. However, when I go to write and preview, the page appears as it does in the original theme. What am I doing wrong? -
Hi there,
Go to My Site ->Customize, and click the gear icon next to the button labeled “Draft Saved”.
Select the Publish option, and then click the button which will now read “Publish”. Now the changes will be live on your site.
