Dara Theme – Site Title Block

    I’m very new to WordPress so please forgive me if I’m not explaining things correctly.

    I recently redesigned the look of our website and there’s now a blank white area between my header image and the menu bar. I believe this is the Site Title block. In the page editor I noticed there’s an area to write in the site title, and an area to write in the tagline, and a box to check/uncheck that displays the Site Title and Tagline. I’ve left both areas blank and unchecked the box to display them but there’s still a blank white area between my header image and menu bar.

    How do I close this blank space so the header image and menu bar are together?

    I have a basic account so I don’t have access to CSS, and even if I did I’ve never used it before so I wouldn’t even know what to do. If I need CSS to edit that blank area out is there a resource online I can go to to hire someone to do it for me?

    Thank you in advance!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Thank you for sharing the details of the issue you are experiencing with the blank white area on your website.

    The space shown on your theme is “hard coded” into the design. It’s normally where your site title, logo, and social icons are shown. It appears you have left these settings empty, but it does not eliminate the “box” they are typically displayed in. Instead, you will need custom CSS to remove this section, which can be accessed by upgrading to our Explorer plan.

    If you’re not comfortable with CSS we would be able to help you since this is a relatively simple change you are trying to make.

    I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any other questions or if there’s anything else I can assist you with.

    Thank you so much for the reply, I truly appreciate it.

    I was afraid it would be something where I’d need to know CSS, which I don’t. Since this is not a website I’m paying for I wouldn’t be able to do the upgrade to the Explorer plan. I would need to hire someone to make the change for me.

    You said this is something you can do? How would I go about hiring you to do that?

    Thank you!

    Hi there

    You also have the option to add only the Custom CSS feature to your site without having to pay for the full upgrade to Explorer plan .

    WordPress.com add-ons are additional features you can purchase for your site. This guide explains the available add-ons and how to purchase one. Available Add-Ons Custom CSS Sites on our Free, and Starter plans can add the option to customize the CSS of their site. Learn more about what you can do with custom CSS or click the button below to add it to your site: Custom CSS Add-On

    Maybe this is a easier spend for you, almost as good as hiring someone to do the upgrade for you. All you will then need to do is add this code in your additional CSS section of the customize page.

    .site-branding {
        display: none;
    }

    Hope this works as an option for you to consider.

    Thanks for the insights, sophywpress! Unfortunately this is an HOA website that I am volunteering my time to update the design. I know they aren’t going to approve and costs associated, even $2 a month. So I need to find someone I can hire to adjust it for me.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts, staff-totoro!

    You mentioned that you could help with removing the white box – thank you so much for offering!! How do I go about hiring you to do that?

    Hi @jokerihu1 to clarify, the only way to address this is with CSS, which requires an upgrade on WordPress.com. WordPress.com support staff cannot be hired (we are not trained web designers) but for simple CSS requests like this one we are skilled enough to provide a code you can use.

    However, since upgrading may not be an option for you instead wish to consider switching to a different theme. Dara is an older theme of ours (launched prior to the develompent of our block editing tools) so it has limited customization options. This means that most customizations beyond the settings the theme offers cannot be done without the use of CSS.

    However, you can considering of these block-based themes instead, which offer the ability to edit the template directly, and will offer many more options for adding a full width header images. https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-site-editing

    For example we show how headers on our block-based themes in this recent webinar we offer via recording:

    Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
