Dark grey background colour in 2016 theme.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I like to add a picture that exactly should blend in with the dark grey (slate grey ? anthracite ?) background colour in the ‘2016’ theme. I guesstimate it is about RGB 26/26/26 but that is just a very little bit too light, it seems. Can someone tell me the exact colour ? Hex value is also o.k., I use Photoshop Elements.
For reference, I refer to the surroundings of the blue coffee can in the right sidebar of the blog (down the sidebar in an image widget). You can (just) see this differs a minimal bit from the ‘2016’ background.
    thanks in advance,
    Marcel.

    Hi Marcel,

The hex colour code for the background colour on weldenkendewijnkisten.wordpress.com is #262626.

If you’re curious about how I found the colour code: I used my browser’s built in tools to inspect the theme’s existing CSS and to see the background colour assigned to the site’s body. We have guidance on how you could use your browser’s tool in a similar way here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/how-to-find-your-themes-css/

Hope that’s helpful! We’re right here if you have any extra questions, too.

Thank you Siobhan! (both for the answer and the tip)
I got it now 99.99% right. But to my despair, Photoshop (Elements) lists this colour as ‘not Internet safe’, implying that different browsers, renderers, illustration programs etc. might give an ever so slightly different result. Did Takeshi Irie realized this upon choosing the colour schemes ?
    a gratefull Marcel
p.s. don’t hit mr. Irie too hard (if you could physically ;-) He did a good job. But I’m sincerely interested in his reaction.

    Hi Marcel,

The default background colour for Twenty Sixteen (and therefore the background chosen by Takeshi) is white. You can check this out on the theme’s demo site.

The darker colour on your site has been set via the Colours & Backgrounds panel of the WordPress.com Customizer. If you’d like, you can also change it there too.

Let me know if that helps out!

Siobhan, do you allow me to have some doubt ?

Other than in most WP themes, ‘2016’ works with a limited number of colour-coordinated palettes, where background, font and widget font colours are coupled. That is for reasons of readability (like contrast). It would be a bit odd if decisions of that kind were taken without consulting the principal designer (I have IT experience, be it on other platforms, and I would not dream of doing that).

    Marcel.

    p.s.
As this becomes a design discussion rather than a straight help question, feel free to prioritize other work – or to ignore this totally. This may be beyond duty. Or refer me to another location for this exchange.

    Hi Marcel,

We do have a team that work on different colour palettes and options for themes (such as Twenty Sixteen) that are brought to the WordPress.com repository. It’s also possible for users to choose any background colour of their choice for that theme.

Theme shops and designers that we work with understand that WordPress.com users will be able to change the default colours and fonts of the themes in our repository.

If #262626 doesn’t work for you then navigate to the Colours & Backgrounds panel of the WordPress.com Customizer and select a different colour (any of your choice!) from the background colour picker.

    Okay Siobhan, I understand now.

One does the design, another the palettes, and the designer needs to accept WordPress rules for color / palette usage. It’s fine by me.

I actually will stick to ‘my’ current palette and the consequent ‘#262626’ background, as I think it is a really good combination of readability and colour usage. Although: I have done some tests with generating ‘#262626’ using different (drawing / graphical) tools and the results are (seriously) amazingly different…

But I’m happy for now. Thanks !
