Dark Mode Editor

I have a wordpress.com site I just use to test how I like certain themes. It’s true I haven’t been editing in awhile so there may have been some changes I haven’t been paying attention to.

I changed the theme on my test site, and now the editor has gone to dark mode. I hate dark mode. It makes me dizzy. How do I get rid of it?

  • Hi there,

Sorry we missed this post! Can you tell us a bit more about the trouble you are having? Where are you seeing this issue, can you share a link to the page you are on when you see this issue so we can take a look and confirm? Thanks for the additional info!

Here are some images that demonstrate the issue. This is with wordpress.com.

This is what the customize area used to look like:

This is what it looks like now (this is a different theme):

So these are my questions. Is the colour of the editor dependent on the them? If I start editing older sites that I have that use older themes, will this editor format (with dark mode) become the default? How can I use a light mode editor?

  • Yes, you are correct. The newest themes are more robust with customization options through the block style editor and that is indicated by the dark mode.

I can see there’s 8 different sites on the account. Let me double check and confirm that’s what is going on. Can you tell me which site you’re working on?

I use it to try out different themes before committing to a design.

So are you saying that all themes that use the “site editor” use a dark mode?

    Hi there!

The Site Editor itself has a dark design. In the screenshots you shared above, one of them is the customizer, and the other one is the Site Editor. They are different things that have different appearances.

With the Site Editor feature, newer themes allow for easy customization of various sections without being limited to preset areas set by theme developers. This significantly simplifies the editing process.

If you’re looking for the Customizer, you can still access it here. But you will see it has fewer options since the active theme is made for Full Site Editing/Site Editor.

    Hope that helps!

Yes, I know that the Site Editor has a dark design. I want to know how to change that, if possible to a light design.

I have trouble looking at light/lighter text on dark backgrounds.

  • Yes, I know that the Site Editor has a dark design. I want to know how to change that, if possible to a light design.

One thing I did want to note is that it’s only this specific sidebar which has a dark colour scheme (no matter the active theme); the rest of the Site Editor tends to be dark text on a light background. By default it doesn’t have a light design option yet; I do agree that it’d be useful to have. I believe you’re not the only person to want this however; so it’s only a matter of time before a light mode does become available.

In the meantime, you can technically avoid using that sidebar as it is – click on the right side to get to the template in order to edit it. At the top of the Site Editor screen there’s a button you can click to search for the name of the template you’d want to edit:

It brings up a search box like this:

Additional things which might help you to work around the items shown in that dark sidebar for now:

    • In order to view a black-on-white list of all your templates while you’re in the Site Editor, append this to the part of the address which ends in site-editor.php:
      ?path=/wp_template/all
It’ll look a little like this as a result: yoursiteaddress.wordpress.com/wp-admin/site-editor.php?path=/wp_template/all
    • Similarly, in order to view your template parts append the following to site-editor.php:
      ?path=%2Fwp_template_part%2Fall
    • For managing a menu, you can do that within the Site Editor using the Navigation Block:
      https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/navigation-block/
    • We have a guide here for using the dedicated ‘Styles’ panel within the Site Editor:
      https://en.support.wordpress.com/using-styles/
    • And of course your pages can always be managed outside of the Site Editor, at Pages > All Pages

I hope that helps, if you do have any other questions let us know!

This helps a lot! Thank you so much.

I’m hopeful, as you said, that there will be a light option not too far in the future.
