Dashboard domain different to paid for domain: does this matter?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I originally set up my blog as bearandbeardbike.wordpress.com to document a cycle trip.
Just before I left I paid for my domain through wordpress but changed the name to samandsheenacycle.com, this is now the primary domain. When I am in my dashboard it still refers to the blog as https://bearandbeardbike.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ in the address bar.

Can I change the original name in the dashboard to match the one I paid for?
Does this have any impact on search engines finding my material?
    Does it matter at all?

When I set the blog up I didn’t really know what I was doing, I have a little more knowledge now but it is still a steep learning curve!

    Thank you for any help
    Sam

    Hi Sam,

The free WordPress.com address for your site (bearandbeardbike.wordpress.com) is used behind the scenes, for example in your site’s dashboard, to make sure nothing ever happens to your site’s contents — even if you stop using your custom domain. However, visitors see your domain samandsheenacycle.com when they visit the site.

If you’d like, you can change your site’s free address to something else. That shouldn’t make much, if any, difference to visitors and search engines, but it can be nice if you want the address in your dashboard to more closely resemble your site’s custom domain.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
