Dashboard question … Comments question
-
Hi, I’m new to WordPress and I think I’m going to like the product (my blog will be private, for family contacts only).
I have a couple of queries – but I don’t know whether it is best to put them in a single message or make a message for each? Here goes:
1.
I’m the administrator. I would appreciate if someone could please confirm that I am seeing the correct type of screen when I make my admin changes via Dashboard: I am getting a text screen, displayed in lines, no graphic buttons or colours or anything. Is this correct (I ask because it looks so primitive compared with WP’s otherwise slick presentation!).2.
As far as I can see, comments (which in our case would represent an ongoing conversation between 10-15 people) appear on a different page from the original posting. Is there any way the administrator (me) can instruct WP to have the comments on the same page as the posting, simply placed underneath in chronological order? Or would this create a risk of slow loading if everything is on the same page – although I would expect each new subject/posting to have a page of its own, with its comments underneath?Thank you.

1. i don’t understand what you’re experiencing. can you explain in other words, or better still show a screenshot?
2. comments are always in the post they are made in. when you click on a post, scroll down towards the end and you should see all the comments made for that post. you can also access comments through dashboard -> comments, where you will see all comments made regardless of which post it is made to, arranged in reversed chronological order.

#1 is a common issue when the url of the blog is entered incorrectly within the URL fields of standalone wordpress. This leads me to believe that the poster is hosted elsewhere and should be over at http://wordpress.org
Could you please provide a link to your blog please? Or at least confirm that it is hosted here at wordpress.com.

Hi, again
Thank you to both Sulz and Theapparatus for your response.
I am indeed on wordpress.com … my url is dk4000.wordpress.com but I presume you’re unable to get in because I’ve made it private (once it’s ready, it will only be for 10-15 people).
In the meantime, I think I’ve solved problem # 1. I had to do a reboot – and hey presto, the problem was gone. I think the issue was lack of available memory capacity on my computer so that instead of showing me the more streamlined view of the Desktop (which I am now able to see), I was being served the text version, presumably because my machine didn’t have the memory to handle the work involved.
Thanks anyway.
With regard to problem # 2, I now realise that the original postings are shown on the front page of the site, with the posting and comments together on a separate page when you click on the subject line. Is it not possible to have the subject lines only on the front page – or does the system insist on placing the text from the entire original posting on the front page, too?
Thanks for any advice.

Thank you, Sulz … is this something the individual Author would insert … or would it be up to the Administrator if he thought a particular posting was a bit lengthy for the front page?

The Fadtastic theme displays the full text of only the most recent post on the front page and linked only for other posts.
