Data Use Consent Settings
-
Hi everyone,
Wordpress is asking for:
“I consent to the processing of: AddressCityCountry CodeEmail AddressFax NumberFirst NameLast NameOrganizationPhone NumberPostal CodeState”
…and says it’s optional, and my domain name seems to be working fine without me granting consent.
So, what are the pros/cons? What gets enabled if I do? What limits do I have if I don’t?
Generally speaking, I’m inclined not to share data I don’t need to.
So what processing are they talking about since it doesn’t seem to be domain registration (which already appears to be done).
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @chartschartswriter, this was when you were registering the domain, right? ICANN requires current contact info, but I can see you’ve opted for domain privacy, so it’s hidden from the public.
Are you seeing that somewhere else?

Hi @supernovia, yeah, I received an email with a link to the consent form. I did opt for domain privacy. So does consenting to that data actually do anything?
In other words, had I not opted for domain privacy, then I’d need to consent for that info to be shared with the registrar. But since I did opt for the privacy, it doesn’t matter.
Do I have that right?
Thanks for the help.

You do need to consent for the information to be shared with the registry, because they are required to have it on file.
Privacy keeps that information you shared from being seen by the public.
Basically, all domains must share to the public the details on who owns them. Privacy elects a third-party to hold the domain, so that third-party’s information is displayed instead of yours.

Yep, I get/understand that info listed in my OP is normally posted/shared with the registry. And that since I have the domain privacy, it won’t be shared/seen by the public.
What I don’t yet get/understand, is that since I have the domain privacy enabled, what is the effect of either consenting, or not consenting, to the below sentence. What’s the technical result in either case?
It doesn’t seem to have effected the actual registration of the domain, which is currently working fine.
In other words, my domain is apparently registered and working fine as I type this. I have domain privacy enabled. So what’s the effect of saying “Yes” to the below? And what’s the effect of saying “No” to the below?
Wordpress is asking for:
“I consent to the processing of: AddressCityCountry CodeEmail AddressFax NumberFirst NameLast NameOrganizationPhone NumberPostal CodeState”

The effect of saying Yes is that we are allowed to pass your information along to the domain registry.
If you say No, your domain registration may be invalidated.
So, just like agreeing to an application or services Terms of Service, I recommend also agreeing to that. :)

Yikes! Currently your consent page says:
Consent is optional
With your consent, WordPress.com may share the following data with the registry services provider, and our data escrow provider…You might want to change it to “Consent is optional. But if you don’t grant it, your domain won’t work!”

Argh sorry! I’m thinking of the wrong consent thing, my mistake.
That’s different from the registry data, you do not need to send that.
