Database question…confused?
-
Hi everyone,
I have a question for you all, hoping somebody can help. Myself and business partners are employing a web developer to build a new branded site for us, unfortunately whilst we completely understand business, finance and suchlike, we are a little confused when it comes to website development or programming.
Our developer is going to be building our site in/usingwordpress, of course. The site will operate in a very similar manner to some social networking sites, so users will be creating their own profiles, which they can add posts to, add photos, possibly videos, create groups, like statuses etc, send messages, and at some point we will also introduce blogging as well as articles from guest writers/speakers that would be of interest to our particular customer demographic, all this along with other functions. The site will also be a membership site, where only members can have full, customisable pages but where guest users can browse.
What we would really like to know is, would this require it to be database driven?
Would it already be database driven by virtue of the fact that it is being built in wordpress?
We understand that we will need a web host, an FTP client to transfer files and a mySQL database (according to the developer we intend to hire).
Can anyone explain all of this in laymans terms please.Any help or advice everyone can provide us with would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

Or perhaps we don’t need a mySQL database? All we do know is that this is causing major headaches over here.

The short answer is, yes, you need a mySQL database. And WordPress runs on a mySQL database.
From what it sounds like, you might need help with WordPress.org (which is a self-hosted blog where you pay for your own hosting) not WordPress.com (where it’s hosted on the WordPress.com servers).
Here’s the difference: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/You should get help from the WordPress.org support here instead: http://wordpress.org/support/
In layman’s terms:
anytime you need to store data (think of it as something similar to what you would put in an Excel spreadsheet), then you need a database. So if you need to store information about users, like their names, addresses, photos, etc., you would put that in a database. If you have login and registration or any similar functionality, you need a database. -
Hi HoneySilvas,
Thanks for the reply, thats really helpful.
Its been causing major headaches for our team, we are dealing with, around, 85-90 real estate construction projects right now, so to finally have this matter cleared up is a weight off.
We were under the illusion that, as our new site would potentially have hundreds of thousands of users (once pace had gained) that wordpress.com was the one to go for. I think we may need to speak to some other web developers as, thus far our current choice is as confused as us.Thanks again, and kind regards

You’re welcome.
From what you’ve described, it sounds like WordPress is a good fit for your needs, it just depends if you want to go with WordPress.org or WordPress.com.
If you go with WordPress.org, you would have to separately purchase your own hosting, database and other back-end stuff and your developer would have to set this all up.
If you go with WordPress.com, WordPress.com will handle all the hosting, database and other back-end stuff for you behind the scenes.

Brilliant stuff, thank you HoneySilvas.
I have looked back through our website proposal, as put forward to us by our developer, and I can now see he did specify that he would use wordpress.org. Just one more question HoneySilvas, we understand the hosting side of things, but regarding a database, I would assume our developer would already have factored this in? He fails to mention it? Do you have any idea on who or what kind ofmdatabase we should be looking at? Any recommendations?
Regards

I don’t know why she’s answering your questions here: this is not the correct forum for support with that version of the software. You should be at WordPress.ORG for help with that.
If you’re paying someone to build you a WordPress.org site, and you have specified it’s a membership site, ask him directly about what is included what you’ve paid for.

He is correct. Again, if you have a WordPress.org , please go to the WordPress.org forums here:
