Data/Emails
-
Hi There,
where does the data sit for people who follow my blog? Does that mean I can email them at a later stage and migrate the data if I move my site onto another hosting platform?
Also, how do I re-send a blog out to people after I build my follower base because they wont have seen it?
Thanks for any helpThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. Sending your followers emails without their specific permission is considered spam and in fact illegal in many countries. By following your blog they did not grant you permission to contact them via email.
That said, if someone follows you while logged in to WordPress.com, all you’ll get is their username. You can view that data in the followers section of the stats pages. At no point will the system give you the email address of followers, except when a non-WordPress.com user follows your blog via email. https://en.support.wordpress.com/followers/
When someone comments on your blog you will be able to see their email address, but that does not give you permission to use their email address for any other purpose.
If you move your site to a different host, the best way to notify your followers is via a post on your current blog. However, provided you move to the WordPress.org platform you can also migrate your followers with you using a plugin. https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
Also, how do I re-send a blog out to people after I build my follower base because they wont have seen it?
The only way to send out a new notification is to unpublish the post, change the date, and republish it. However, this is considered spammy behaviour and won’t get you much love from the blogging community. A better practice is to have a regular feature where you highlight one of your older posts, either by reblogging or by posting a link to it in a new post.

Hi, thanks for this. It was more about migrating followers rather than illegally using their data but I appreciate your thorough explanation.
What is a slug as someone mentioned that would re-blog something but I have no idea what it is or how to use it? Appreciate the etiquette point too, good to know…it was more that I was practising with posts before I had any followers and trying to work out how I blog them when I have traffic (if I do)…your other suggestions make sense, thanks so much. -
Slugs and reblogs are separate things.
A slug is the last part of your post URL, the bit that comes after the date. By default the slug matches your post title, but you can change it if, for example, you have a very long title. This post gives a very good overview of post slugs: https://lorelle.wordpress.com/2015/03/12/wordpress-school-post-slug/
Reblogs are a feature where you click a button on a post and it automatically creates a new post on your site with a link to the original post and a short extract. You can reblog your own posts or those of other bloggers, provided they have reblogging enabled on their sites. https://en.support.wordpress.com/reblogs/
On your own site reblogging is an easy way to give older posts some new attention. I prefer to manually post a link to older posts with my own commentary, but most people simply use reblogging for this purpose. Of course, if you disable reblogging on your own site you can’t reblog your own posts either.
When reblogging other people’s posts, keep in mind that not everyone likes it. But nowadays most people who don’t like it have it disabled on their sites anyway.

This is so clear and helpful, thanks again! I’ll try not to annoy anyone and learn the blog-etiquette/Bletiquette!

Don’t worry too much about it. You pick it up as you go along. Timethief, who commented in the other thread, actually has many posts on blogging etiquette, best practices, and the more technical aspects on her blog.
