de-blocking old user name
-
I changed the user name to make the user name available to a colleague. No the user name seems to be blocked for each of us. Is there a possibility to optain the old user name back?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Not if you selected the “yes please permanently disable xxx.wordpress.com” option. In that case it’s gone forever and nobody will ever be able to use it again.
-
sorry, this is not about a blog name but about a user name for my personal account. The last sentence of my question was automatically inserted by word press and can be ignored.
-
Ah, in that case it’s gone forever:
Once you change your username you will not be able to change it back and the old name will not be available for you or anyone to use.

I have never known WordPress.com to make exemptions for anybody. Basically everyone thinks that they are an exception and the rules shouldn’t apply to them.
However if you want I can flag this for staff attention, but I am practically certain that they will tell you the same thing.
-
Thanks for flaggin this issue. For sure there was a warning when changing the user name. But maybe there should be a double double check in the procedure of user name changes to make sure that every body understands the full scale of consequences such a change can have.

I have flagged it, but it looks as though there is a double warning according to the instructions; once when it asks you whether to change the blog name too and later as a confirmation. Please be patient, staff look at threads in order and it can take a while for them to get round to a thread

Hi there!
We do not reuse or reassign blog names on WordPress.com. Deleting is permanent and the name cannot be used again. There are several warnings about this during this process in addition to the warnings found in the instructions:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/This means that you will need to select a different name for your WordPress.com blog.
Keep in mind we also offer an upgrade for custom domain names and you can use any WordPress.com blog URL underneath a custom domain. For more details about how domain mapping works:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/I hope that clarifies things!

Dear csonnek,
thanks for the information. But my question was not about blog name but about reuse of a user name. But I guess that the same policy applies here.
What would be most interesting to me is, what’s the idea behind that policy? Maybe you can give me a hint on that.
Besides the user name issue I’m very impressed by wordpress, it’s features, design, usability and nontheless that you keep it free of charge. Congratulations for that! -
The change your username policy is clear:
Once you change your username you will not be able to change it back and the old name will not be available for you or anyone to use. http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/
-
My apologies. The same policy applies to usernames in addition to site names and I should’ve made that more clear in the response.
Thanks @timethief for clarifying.
