Deactivating a Theme
-
I seem to struggle finding the simplest and most basic functionality. Deactivating or Deleting a Theme. Sadly, I fell for this ‘FREE’ theme which mislead me so badly through making me think that I am getting the design shown to me. Instead I only get the simplest and most boring look. And only when I start upgrading, which of course means ‘PAY’, that I could get the desired look. I completely understand if this is what the creator wants to eventually happen. But I find it so sad that it can’t be communicated right in front, before you activating it.
And so I have begun hating the theme. That said, a secondary nightmare has emerged. A simple ‘Deactivate’ or ‘Delete’ the theme button can’t be found. Does anyone know where I can find that? Or could someone tell me how to deactivate this ugly theme?
Thanks in Advance for your help.

The blog I need help with is gorgeou8.wordpress.com.
http://gorgeou8.wordpress.com/ is totally empty, no posts no pages, nothing.

Also note that you cannot “delete” or “deactivate” a theme. Your blog needs a theme or else it would look like a page of unformatted text. Choose a theme. Any theme. Change themes as often as you like. Previous themes will give way to new tests of other themes. Read the information about each theme, and follow the directions for each carefully. You will need some content to experiment with: pictures, texts, embedded content, and so on.
What do you mean by:
“And only when I start upgrading, which of course means ‘PAY’, that I could get the desired look.”
That is, specifically, what is your desired look? The free themes have lots of options to make them personal with featured images, headers, sidebar variations, background colors and images, and many offer a variety of post formats, choice of text or link colors, plus other possibilities.
The paid upgrades may, or may not, have other bells and whistles which you may or may not need. A site without any content is still empty whether it is fancy and expensive, or free with choices to make it your very own expression of creativity.
If you have specific ideas for how you want your site to work, please provide examples so we can help.

Thanks guys for your replies! It clearly shows my naivety on this subject matter as I am a total novice on WordPress, let alone choosing and applying a theme.
@galois – I actually didn’t know that my blog site is already out there publicly published. I know the url is already available, but I thought the page is not yet live. As I am in the middle of preparing my content at the moment which includes choosing a theme. So when I clicked on ‘activate’ button from this theme (https://wordpress.com/themes/illustratr/), I thought I am just activating it through an admin preview, not publicly, and for me to approve it first if I really like it or not.
@1tess – that’s a real shame not being able to delete a theme. Albeit plain and bland, I thought before I applied that theme to my blog site, it was using a ‘default’ WordPress theme of some sort? I basically just wanted to revert it back to that state.
And what I meant with my statement which you’ve quoted is that, I thought once you activate a theme you would get exact look and layout ‘with dummy text and images’ as shown here https://wordpress.com/themes/illustratr/ Now I understand I need a content to complete the look. And to answer your question in your last sentence, that is THE look I would like to have and achieve. Again, I thought the layout is automatically created for me with dummy content once the theme is activated and only for me to replace the content to my own.
Apologies to my lack of knowledge on this subject matter. As I really thought creating a website and choosing a theme for it through wordpress is ‘easy’ especially for a novice like myself, but clearly not. I thought it’s just like ‘plug and play’ process. But seems like I need to have some development or technical knowledge too which is a turn off.
Maybe next time when I have so much extra time that I’ll revisit this desire to have my own blog site.

You can choose any theme. Change themes whenever you like.
If you don’t have content then you can make up some dummy text so that you can experiment with various themes:
http://www.lipsum.com/As for pictures, do you have anything from your digital camera? or any digital images at all? Just upload whatever pics you like and imagine them as photos you’d like to see on your site.
Keep in mind that when you start a site it is never going to be finished. New things will come up: more information, different or additional pictures you want to include, different formatting: life keeps changing! So will your site.
You can experiment privately on your site by setting it to private:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Only you (or folks you specially invite) will be able to see what you are doing and learning if you choose to set your site to “private.”Each theme here has pluses and minuses, pros and cons. That is good because it means your site will be unique: you can set it up to match what you want it to to. It won’t be a cookie-cutter site that your potential readers or clients will recognize as a cheap alternative to paying an expert to design it.
That said, though, means you will have to invest some time getting acclimatized to this platform. If you site is private, you can take as long as you like to work on it without public people see it before you are ready. WordPress.com has an excellent tutorial which will go a long way to get you started: http://learn.wordpress.com/
There is also a lexicon (dictionary) of terms which you will find useful as you experiment: http://en.support.wordpress.com/lexicon/ -

Great! We volunteers, and staff, are here to help whenever you have other questions. If I were a betting person, then I’d believe you can get a site developed the way you want it to be. Put it up even if it’s not perfect, then continue developing it.
Best wishes on your endeavor
