deciding between transferring domain to wordpress vs. domain mapping

Is there an advantage to transferring the domain to wordpress vs. mapping the domain? Also, if I decide to, can I transfer the domain from wordpress away to a different host?

  • Hi, this may help:

Basically, if you map your domain, you’ll continue renewing its registration with your current provider.

If you transfer, you’ll pay for registration renewals here. The first year is included with the plan. After that you’ll pay these rates for renewals:

    Domain Pricing and Available TLDs

Transferring is nice if you want all of your payments related to your site and domain in one place. And you get the first year free. Note you would typically not be able to transfer elsewhere for 60 days, but you could point elsewhere if needed.

Mapping is nice if you have your domain registered for a long time elsewhere, if transfer isn’t available for your domain, if you’re using a subdomain, or if you’ve determined you’ll save by keeping it where it is. Just be sure to keep your domain renewed through its existing registrar.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have questions.
