default avatar for anonymous users
-
Is is possible to add a default avatar to all the anonymous users who post at a blog?
I don’t like the empty square :-) avatar… It would be really cool if we had that feature!
-
I’d love that feature, but I guess with the recent addition of Gravatar it’s the best to just forward your regular commenters there.
-
I was just about to post something related to this.
You’re right, it would be nice to have a blog-specific avatar for anonymous users that you could design yourself. Even better, it would be cool to have a different one that shows up for pingbacks.
In theory, you could do it manually with gravatar. You could set up a quick @gmail.com account, use it to register at gravatar and upload the image. Then, what you’d have to do is edit each comment and insert that email addy. Presto!

i tested chenzhen’s suggestion and while i got the avatar to change in the ‘comments’ section of dashboard, it is not reflected in my ‘recent comments’ widget at the sidebar.

oh silly me, i uploaded my gravatar but didn’t put it with my e-mail that’s why. so it really does work! =)

yeah but that would mean lots of e-mail addresses. ;) right now, i’m going to put my avatar on my pingbacks.
also, while it would be nice to put our customised avatars on non-wp commenters, this would mean you have to erase the e-mail the commenter has entered.
-
Which you still have in the email sent to you [provided you have that turned on].
I’ve been thinking about this since my previous post and I do think it’s a bit more effort than I want to do. I’ve been telling some regular commenters to go to Gravatar, so I’ll guess I’ll leave it with that.
Pingbacks is a good idea though. :)

Awesome idea :-)
I do have comment moderation turned .
*goes to make yet another gmail account*

Here’s a weird one. Can someone confirm what I’m seeing.
I’ve been able to change the avatarless folks for the most part (at least the first few pages of comments) except those who don’t have websites listed.
Contrast http://dark2light.wordpress.com/2007/09/30/family/#comment-4967 (avatarless person with a linked website) with http://dark2light.wordpress.com/2007/09/27/my-grandfather-2/#comment-4977 (avatarless person without a linked website)

Here’s a little experiement I did.
I took a websiteless/avatarless person and gave them a website (http://example.com) and now the avatar connected to my gravatar email that I’m using for this does show up.
-
So it only works with people who have websites listed?
That’s not too bad, at least it works.
-
Just changed the avatar for pingbacks and it looks so much better now. Great idea, chenzhen and everyone else. :)
-
I don’t know… it seems sort of random. I was able to assign the gravatar to some of my avatarless commenters without websites but not to others.
*shrug*
I like my blue smile better than the ghost person so just having that on the bulk of the comments is better.

I hope that someone from the wordpress team is reading this and we can have a default avatar for anonymous posters soon :-)
chenzhen’s idea was good but it would be even better if we could have that feature in our dashboard
