Hi there,
You can switch the category that is default on the Categories page in the admin dashboard. Follow these instructions to do so:
- Go to Posts → Categories in your dashboard.
- Click the ellipsis (three dots) to the right of the category you want to assign as the default.
- Select Set as default from the drop-down menu.
There’s always going to be a default category, so you’ll have to choose one.
For reference, check out this link: https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/#choose-a-default-category
I hope this helps!

Hey there,
I’m sorry you were dissatisfied with my answer. I’m just another member and not WordPress staff or anything, so please don’t let my answer affect your opinion of them or these forums.
In my experience, the default category will always be set to the “Uncategorized” category when first starting a WordPress website, which is still a category in and of itself.
I’m not sure if that provides clarity, but either way, I hope that restarting your site solved your problem!
