Default category is Uncategorized

  I couldn’t assign a category to my posts; all were ‘uncategorized’. So I am supposed to go to Writing-Settings-Default Post Category–and simply choose a default category from a drop-down menu. NO! the only thing in that drop-down menu is also ‘Uncategorized’. (And yes I did make sure search engines could link to my blog.)
  What gives? I’m not computer-illiterate and my English is impeccable. But no answer in WP or Google helps.
