default user role
-
My WORDPRESS.COM privacy settings allow everyone to use my blog. That is easy to set.
The USER menu seems to give the ROLE for specific users, not all users.
I cannot see how to set the DEFAULT so that every USER will have the ROLE as AUTHOR.
(I would be the only BLOG OWNER and ADMINISTRATOR)The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot set a default role. By default all users you add at users > add users are contributors. You can change that as you add them.
-
My understanding is that this means if I set PRIVACY SETTINGS so that the site is VISIBLE TO EVERYONE and do nothing else than all users will be CONTRIBUTORS.
Is there any way the BULK ACTIONS command in the USER menu can be use to change the role of all users?
Will a CONTRIBUTOR be able to add a comment to an existing blog without having it first approved by me?

No and please see here and then you will be crystal clear on what you can do and cannot do.

Nowhere in the ADDING-USERS menu does it say the following:
By default users in non private blogs who are not specifically added by an administrator is given a role of CONTRIBUTOR. In WORDPRESS.ORG, this default can be changed in the SETTINGS GENERAL SCREEN. In WORDPRESS.COM, this default cannot be changed.
If this is the case, I suggest that you add this to your documentation somewhere. (if this statement appears somewhere else in the documentation, please let me know)>

Unless you specifically add someone at users > add new, then no one would be a contributor or anything else. Anyone that visits your blog is just that, a visitor. They can view your site, and if you have commenting enabled, then they can post a comment, but they cannot contribute posts or anything like that unless you specifically allow them to by adding them as a contributor, author or whatever at setting under users > add new.

I hope someday WORDPRESS.COM can consider adding the ability to change the default, like one can in WORDPRESS.ORG.
Thanks for the clarification. You have resolved my question.
