Delay in posts showing in Reader?
-
I’m getting far fewer posts showing up in my Reader. Has everyone gone on holiday or is there a delay in posts showing up in the Reader? Today, at about 5pm GMT I received an email to say the Daily Post had published a new post (Weekly Photo Challenge – ‘Half and Half’) but (time now 9.30pm GMT) this post has yet to show up in the Reader feed. Anyone else experiencing this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Figured it out. The “Half and Half” post at https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_photo_challenge/half-and-half/ is a special post type that is sometimes used by the WordPress.com Editorial Team when they write content on The Daily Post blog. That special post type is not available to normal WordPress.com blogs and is also not picked up by the Reader. You might think of it as closer to a page than a post and therefore not included in the normal feed which the Reader goes by when deciding what to display.
In other words, that particular post is a really odd exception.
Can you find any other specific examples that aren’t from The Daily Post blog? If so, I will look into that too.

Within the past hour I added a page, Rope Trick, to my blog, We Were Here First, the Pacific Coast League Before the Big Leagues came. It has not showed up on my all pages index. Perhaps I mistakenly published it as a post rather than a page. How do I reverse this?

@richardleutzinger, here is the direct link to the list of posts for just your blog in the reader:
https://wordpress.com/read/blog/feed/13938087The “Rope Trick” post is the only one there because it’s the only one published in your Posts section. I reviewed your blog and I see that there are a couple other posts but they are in the trash.
To clarify, the Reader is only for posts, not pages. So if you are using pages, they will not show up in the Reader by design.
Let me know if you still have any questions!

Thanks. I didn’t intend for Rope Trick to be a post. I meant it to be a page. Can I move it to pages or should I re-type it and enter it then as a page. I’m not sure how I made the mistake.

@designsimply Thanks for replying. This is a change from usual though, isn’t it? The Daily Post’s posts (including the Weekly Photo Challenge) used to show up in the Reader. I can’t find any other examples to direct you to. The most recent post to show up in my Reader feed is one by Media Diversified and that was posted 7 hours ago. This is unusual behaviour!

Hi…My views/visitors are really low on a couple days and only in the US. Any idea what happened or is it accurate? Johnnsims.wordpress.com
Thanks!

@josephinecorcoran, it is different than usual in the sense that not all of the posts on The Daily Post are like that one. I think it was an exception and the rest if the blogs you are following won’t have the issue. If you see something that seems off though, we can always check it out if you post the details. Hopefully it won’t come up again though.

Thank you for the prompt response. The problem isn’t with the blogs I’m following, but stats for my blog. Even with a lag for real time views to catch up, views aren’t registering.

My blog, posted about ten hours ago, has not appeared in the Reader. In addition, it seems to me that my feed is much smaller than usual. My main concern is wondering why my blog post is not showing up. I even went in earlier today and reduced the number of tags, although the number wasn’t nearly high enough to be a problem. If it’s just one of those things I can accept it, but if there’s a problem I’d like to get ahead of it. http://www.breathelighter.wordpress.com

@teamjns @ginagolightly – Yes, I agree with you, my feed seems much smaller than usual, my stats are pretty low, I’m experiencing similar issues to you.
-
@teamjns, I looked at your blog and I don’t see anything wrong with the stats. Keep in mind that it’s possible for stats to fluctuate for a number of reasons including how often other sites link to you or where you stand in search engine rankings for different words (which itself can fluctuate depending on what search engines do). One thing you can do is look through the times your stats were higher and compare it to the times it’s lower and try to see if you can find any hints about the referrers—try to see if there was one there before that is no longer there. Fewer links from other places is one possible reason for lower stats. I also noticed a few other things about your blog you might want to take a look at:
You are using a high number of tags, see https://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/#missing-posts
You have not posted as often recently. This might be the main issue. If most of your traffic comes from social media like Facebook or LinkedIn after cross-posting to those, then less frequent posts would mean less traffic from those sorts of places. Take a look at the Insights section in your stats at https://wordpress.com/stats/insights and it will show you the frequency of posting at the top in a graph.

@ginagolightly, I noticed you asked your question in at least two separate forum threads so far, I replied earlier at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/reader-48?replies=11#post-2428088

You can’t switch between page and post automatically, but what you can do is start a page then copy the content from the post into the page. I would recommend using the “Text” mode in the editor when copying and pasting in this case.

@designsimply I’ll adjust the tags, but there is a problem somewhere with the stats. The views are consistently lower and only in the U.S. Do I need to change something in my settings? Has Google made any changes? Thanks for the insight.
-
@teamjns, I don’t think it’s a problem with the stats themselves so far because I haven’t seen this being reported as a widespread issue in support requests. It’s possible your stats are lower for a number of reasons. Stats can fluctuate. There is no guarantee they will stay the same as the did in the past. If you’re still concerned, consider trying the suggestions I mentioned earlier if you haven’t already, such as looking a referrers over time to see if fewer places are linking to you and perhaps making sure you are posting with at least the same frequency as you were before.
Regarding Google, their algorithm is proprietary so I really can’t say how it works or whether it has changed. Google does provide some tools to find out more about your site on their service and you can read about how to set that up for your blog at https://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
