Delete a site

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a site on WordPress which seems to be a conduit for hackers into another site, hosted by BlueHost. I have spent hundreds of dollars with Sitelock, and still can’t use my main blogsite. I have cancelled my Sitelock contract. How do I delete the WordPress site? And then, what’s the best way of cleaning out my other site and protecting it? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    HI there,

The website which you’ve mentioned is using Self-hosted version of WordPress which is available at WordPress.org and hosted by Bluehost rather then WordPress.com, this forum is dedicated to sites build on WordPress.com

The right Forum to seek help about your WordPress.org self-hosted site is:
    https://wordpress.org/support
    please try seeking help there.

Also, try to your hosting provider for the support in your case it’s Bluehost so you should contact them for help.

To learn the difference between WordPress.com Vs WordPress.org

    Thanks!

    Hi Vikram,

The site I want to delete is driver67.com, which I think is on wordpress.com? Sorry for confusion – WordPress sent me here; I think driver67.com is the conduit for hackers, because it links to thenewcolloquium.

    Hope this helps.

@paulmarkphillips2016 Hi, yes, driver67.com is indeed hosted by WordPress.com. Based of that, you can delete that website by following these instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

However, rarely is a WordPress.com blog hacked unless somebody knows the password to your account. WordPress.com’s security is very impressive: https://en.support.wordpress.com/security/

If you believe that somebody has compromised your account, changing your password is the best thing to do, but I’d also suggest adding 2 Step Verification: https://en.support.wordpress.com/security/two-step-authentication/

Also ensure that nobody knows your Post by Email address: https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/

This will help keep your account very secure. However, I’m not exactly sure if you mean that your site has been hacked. If you’re worried it has been, you can tag staff and they can check for suspicious activity: https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

Please be aware that deleting a site is permanent and once thirty days has passed, none of the content can be recovered. It is recommended you export your content first, or alternatively set your website to private so only you and the people who you choose can view it, unless you’re absolutely certain you want it to be deleted.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for that. WordPress blames Bluehost; Bluehost blames WordPress; Sitelock, having promised the earth, delivered nothing but more ‘registered users’ and my being blocked from my own site by Jetpack.

All of the content of driver67.com has been exported to thenewcolloquium, so I’ve no concerns on that front. At least if I delete driver67 it will remove one of the excuses Bluehost has.

    Thanks for your help.
    Paul

driver67.com is not hosted by Bluehost, it’s hosted by WordPress.com. As such, Sitelock isn’t needed on it as WordPress.com itself offers fantastic security.

I wouldn’t recommend deleting driver67.com because of Bluehost, they are not associated with that site whatsoever (your domain is also with WordPress.com) and it seems fine to me. What exactly did Bluehost involve it with?

Let us know if you have any further issues or questions.

I’ve also tagged staff to this thread just in case they’re help, as they might have access to information which us volunteers don’t know about: https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

  • Hi there,

As @torres126 indicated, there’s no way your hacker problem could be originating from the site at driver67.com. The only way that site can be accessed is via the WordPress.com account of the site owner, and any other WordPress.com accounts the site owner gives access. That particular site has no other users besides the site owner.

The mere fact of that site linking to your Bluehost site (a link only the site owner could have added), does not mean that’s where the hackers are coming from – a link to it from another site can in no way compromise the security of any website.

That said, if you are sure you want to delete the driver67.com site, you need to be logged in as the username account you used to create that site and register that domain, which is not the account you’re using to post in this forum thread. Once logged into the correct account, you will be able to cancel the domain from the Purchases page, and then delete the site from My Site ->Settings.

So, instead of closing down driver67, do you think I should migrate thenewcolloquium back to WordPress? Maybe that’s the answer…..Would save me money, too.

  • The site driver67.com is on WordPress.com already.

There are two sites at issue here. Yes, driver67.com is hosted by WordPress.

thenewcolloquium.com is hosted by BlueHost, but has been under attack by hackers on a daily basis since November 2017.

So my question is, should I get WordPress to host thecolloquium.com and cut Bluehost out of the picture? They and Sitelock seem to have caused me a lot of trouble, and cost me hundreds of dollars.

You can certainly move thenewcolloquium.com back to WordPress.com. You can find more on doing that here.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/

If you find self-hosting your site and the problems you are experiencing more trouble than it’s worth, it may be a good move for you. If you decide to, let us know if you have any issues, questions, or problems.
