Delete account- email used by someone else
-
Someone else signed up for an account with my email. Maybe I will want to use a wordpress account in the future, but it is ridiculous that someone else can put my email address in to a system and that it can then not be removed. I have already changed the password and deleted the content, but I wish to delete the account.

When a new user signs up for an account, they must confirm the account activation using the email address supplied. If this other individual had access to your email address, there’s nothing we can do about that.
It is possible, however, that someone else began the process and never confirmed it. If you post your preferred email address here, I can take a look for you. Note that if you format the email address properly, our system will automatically redact it (hide it from the public view) so only I can see it.

No one else should have access to my email. But someone frequently uses it in error (it must be close to her own) so I get signed up for things often. This is the first time I have not been able to delete the account.

Hi again,
The email address that you posted is for your account that you’re using to post here. That means that you, and only you, are using that email address on WordPress.com, as each user must use a unique email address to set up a new account.
Did you have a different email address that someone might have used? Or was the username that you wanted already taken?

I got an email notifying me of ‘my account’. It had a name associated with it which is not my name (first name yes, second name no). It had a blog associated with it. Using that email, I requested a new password sent to my email so I could log in and try to delete the account, as this was not an option from the original email. I deleted the blog, I changed the name, and I posted the above message. Yes, it’s the account I’m using to post because I wiped it clean, changed the name, and changed the password. But I would like it deleted. None of this would have happened had the original email (which did not say ‘click here to confirm your account’) had a link for ‘click here if you have not signed up for this service’.

This was the first and only email I received from wordepress that started this fiasco:

Hi again,
I’m very sorry for your inconvenience here. I’d strongly recommend that you change your email password immediately, as that’s the only way this kind of thing is possible.
While we do not allow users to delete accounts (see http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/ for more information), now that it has been set up with your email address, and you’ve changed your password here, if your email is secure you should not have any further issues with this. Furthermore, your account can be used in the future for a new blog, should you wish to have one.
If you choose not to use the account and have no blog associated with it, then it will become dormant and invisible to the internet, unless you choose to use it again in the future.
-
How is that an acceptable policy? Even if my email was hijacked, it is unacceptable that you will not delete the account. I don’t want it to go ‘dormant’- I want to not get mail from WordPress about ‘my account’ or have my email associated with something I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR. I can’t see how this is legal or kosher to not allow people to delete their private details, particularly if they were not given willingly.
Please let me know how I can pursue this complaint, I am NOT happy with this outcome.

There is no way to proceed. WordPress.com has never deleted accounts in the 7+ years I’ve been here. You have reached the end of the line.
-
PS – had you not confirmed the email account the account and blog I don’t think would have been created – it just would have went away – lots of people spell the email wrong on a new account and I think the staff said the reserved name would go away in a period of time and the name released for use again – but once an account has been created it is here forever – that is to prevent someone from taking the identity of another person
