Delete account please

Dear all, Alecia and Denise too, please may I cancel this whole thing that I unwittingly started?
To clarify; I don’t want the domain name or the blog…I just want to delete the whole process

    Is this o.k?

    Kind regards

    Sonia Sharma

    Hi Sonia,

I understand you would like to cancel your custom domain: bedfordmountaineeringclub.com, but please note that this is different from other upgrades and is stated during the purchase process.

Canceling a domain at this time means you completely give up ownership of the domain. There is no guarantee the domain will become available to re-register after cancellation.

You are welcome to keep your domain with us and update the nameservers to point to another hosting provider by following this guide:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

After 60 days from the date of purchase or registrant contact information change, you may also transfer your domain to another registrar by following this guide:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

If you would like to completely cancel your ownership of the domain name, please reply to confirm.

Once you cancel that I can give you instructions on deleting the site.

    Hi Grace
Yes, I do want to completely cancel this
I am sorry, I am out of my depth with this and was unaware that I’d signed up to anything.
Very embarrassing to be so unknowledgeable about these things.

  • Unknown's avatar

I was wanting something very specific, but, although Alecia and Denise were helpful, my requirements won’t be met by WordPress.com.
It was very confusing for me, so I do apologise for my lack of expertise.

  • Unknown's avatar

I understand. The domain has been canceled. Now, if you want to permanently delete your site, follow the guide below:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/delete-site/

Please read the warnings and advice before deleting a site, as we can’t revert a site deletion for any reason and the site address cannot be reused.

If you want to hide your site instead, you can use the following guide to make your site private so only you and people that you have invited can view the site:

    Hello Grace
As you can see, I am now trying to be up and running on this site! (sorry to be confusing…this was like a whole new world to me, and I was out of my depth)
I would like to reinstate the ‘bedfordmountaineeringclub.com’ domain.
    Is that possible?

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, I am trying to add links from my ‘links page’ to other websites of interest, but this is not working?

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to reinstate the ‘bedfordmountaineeringclub.com’ domain. Is that possible?

Just to confirm, you would like the domain bedfordmountaineeringclub.com returned to your account. Is that correct? Just reply back, and I will reach out to the registrar!

Also, I am trying to add links from my ‘links page’ to other websites of interest, but this is not working?

The Links page appears to be up and running on my side here:

    Links

Can you let me know what specifically about that page isn’t working?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello Jeremey
You are right, the links are working now, they weren’t before because I was attempting to put them as ‘html’ in the box.
I think it’s my inadequacy in these matters that makes me panic and nervous, many apologies. You Happiness Engineers are very patient people!
Jeremey, I have a question before I can confirm whether we/I want the Domain name reinstated…if someone were to Google ‘Bedford Mountaineering Club’ would they get to my current WordPress blog even if I didn’t have a Domain name?
Would punters see my WordPress blog top of Google search even if I don’t have a domain name?
Will my blog be smartphone compatible, again if I don’t have a domain name?
    Next question;
I would like to change the colour and size of the massive black title rectangle on my homepage…I have tried to work out how, but have failed. Do you have any guidance here?
    Thank you Jeremey

    Hi Sonia!

Jeremey’s out today, so wanted to jump in and help with each of your questions. :)

<blockquoteI have a question before I can confirm whether we/I want the Domain name reinstated…if someone were to Google ‘Bedford Mountaineering Club’ would they get to my current WordPress blog even if I didn’t have a Domain name?

Domain names don’t have as much importance on your rankings in Google as your content does. The best advantages domain names provide are that people can remember them easier. bedfordmountaineeringclub.com is slightly more easy to remember than bedfordmountaineeringclub.wordpress.com, but Google just sees it as a site either way. Domains help with people not machines. :)

Would punters see my WordPress blog top of Google search even if I don’t have a domain name?

No one can guarantee to put your site at the top of a Google ranking for any search term. The best way to be placed higher in Google is to have lots of people visiting your pages, and that’s not really a matter of your domain name, just of traffic. We have some additional tips on traffic building here:

    http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/seo-on-wordpress-com/
    http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2014/05/02/seo-quick-tips/

Will my blog be smartphone compatible, again if I don’t have a domain name?

This only depends on your theme, and not whether or not you have a domain name. No themes require domain names.

I would like to change the colour and size of the massive black title rectangle on my homepage…I have tried to work out how, but have failed. Do you have any guidance here?

This change would require the Premium plan, as it needs some CSS. But here’s the code if you decide to purchase the Premium plan:

    div.site-branding{
         background: #1d1d1d;
    }

Once you have the Premium plan, copy and paste that CSS into your CSS Editor. Then change #1d1d1d to the hex value for any color you like. I usually pick out colors here:

    Dear Alex G
Thank you very much for your clear and detailed response, giveing me food for thought.
    Another 2 questions please;
I do not want people to ‘leave a reply’ on any of my pages…is it possible for me to not have that facility?
I would like people to be able to email me, how do I set that up?

Just to let you know, we are considering the Premium Plan, but only due to that one design issue about the massive black rectangle!

Look forward to hearing from you
    Thank you very much

    Hello again, Sonia!

Since you have a couple different issues, let’s go through each one-by-one:

I do not want people to ‘leave a reply’ on any of my pages…is it possible for me to not have that facility?

Two places to change this. First, change your default for new posts and pages here:

    https://bedfordmountaineeringclub.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php

Uncheck the options for “Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks) ” and “Allow people to post comments on new articles.” Scroll down and save changes.

Next, you’ll need to set all your currents posts and pages to not allow comments. See all your posts here:

    https://bedfordmountaineeringclub.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

Check all posts, then select “Edit” in the “Bulk Actions” dropdown. This will display a lot of options, and one is a dropdown for “Comments.” Choose “Do Not Allow” then click the blue update button.

Do the same thing for all your pages here:

    https://bedfordmountaineeringclub.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

I would like people to be able to email me, how do I set that up?

To reduce the amount of spam you’d receive, we recommend adding a Contact Form to a page on your site for readers to email you:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

You can have the contact form feedback emailed to any address you choose, but the responses get run through our spam filter first. :)

Just to let you know, we are considering the Premium Plan, but only due to that one design issue about the massive black rectangle!

That is a particular quirk about Hemingway Rewritten — there a number of other themes that use custom headers without that box:

    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/custom-header/

But if you decide to use the Premium plan, I can help you use CSS to customize your site in a number of ways. Just let me know. :)

    Dear Alex G
Thank you so much for all of your clear guidance, it’s a joy for a newcomer like me to have someone like you who is so clear in instruction.

I have one problem- the ‘contact’ form displays my name and email address! I’m sure this can’t be legal…but it is there everytime I ‘view the site’
Please let me know why this is happening and what I can do about it!

    Kind regards

    Sonia

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Sonia,

That’s the auto-fill in your browser remembering your contact details. When I visit your contact form I see my details autofilled too:

If you want to stop your browser from auto-filling details like this you can change it in your browser settings:

    https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/142893?hl=en

But the contact form will not display your details to anyone else. :)

    Hi Alex

    Thank you!

Well, I am persevering and it does look like it’s coming together-Thank you.
Black rectangle…I’ll see what the others think once I show them the blog.

    Kind regards

    Bonjour Alex

Appears that we already own a domain name…
If I want to, am I able to transfer our domain name to WordPress blog?
Is there any cost attached to doing this?

    Kind regards

    Sonia

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Sonia,

Yup! We call this domain mapping and have the step-by-step process here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Domain mapping costs $13 (USD) annually, and you’ll still need to keep your domain renewed with your registrar.

Let me know if you hit any snags with that process. The trickiest bit is usually the name servers with your registrar (step 3) because each registrar has their menu setup a little differently. But let me know and I’m here to help. :)

    Dear Alex
I am so sorry I missed your reply until now!
Thank you for all your help so far.
I will consult the others as to whether to domain map (I did look at your support pages too)
Unfortunately, when one types in Bedford Mountianeering Club WordPress into good old Google…this particular chat thread is the first thing people see, and infact not the blog at all…is there anything I can do to sort this?

    Thank you
    Sonia

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Sonia,

Google controls how they rank pages for various search terms. Over time as your page gets more and more activity, and this thread gets less and less, your site will get a higher ranking and be displayed more prominently.

For what it’s worth, I googled those terms in an anonymous browser and saw your site as the first listing:

And once I removed “WordPress” it was hard to find this forum thread in Google at all.

Since you’ve participated this thread multiple times, Google likely thought you wanted to see this thread more than the site itself.

New folks looking for mountaineering clubs aren’t likely to add “WordPress” to their google searches unless they already know where to find you. So if they do happen to add WordPress to the search, they’ll more likely click your blog’s link instead and that helps the page’s rank in Google too.

    Dear Alex

Thank you very much for your guidance.
I will get people to click on the site alot, and that will then make us more prominent.

    Kind regards
    Sonia
