Delete domain name
-
Hi,
I own a blog called thewriteress.com. I want to delete the site but, when I go to tools>delete site, it shows the following:
Warning! You cannot delete a blog if the blog has a domain registration upgrade. You must have access to the blog in order to get to the domain manager.
If you do not want to use your blog any more please make it private. Other users won’t be able to visit the blog but you can still access the Dashboard so you can get to the domain manager.
I no longer want this site and wish to delete it ASAP. Please let me know about the best possible way to do it.
Thank you in advance for your help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello, I’m getting the same message when attempting to cancel my domain. I’d just like to cancel the name but keep my current plan. I don’t need a refund or anything. How would I go about canceling and how long does it normally take for the cancellation to process? Thanks for any help you can give!

Hi Hurera,
Just to confirm, do you want to cancel the domain thewriteress.com along with deleting the blog? (Please keep in mind that canceling a domain means you give up ownership of that domain name. The domain name may not be released immediately, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to register it again in the future.)
Marcus,
To confirm, you no longer want ownership of the domain name artofanthony.com at all? If you’d like to keep the domain name but use it somewhere else, you can transfer it instead: Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar
If you don’t want it at all, please confirm that and I’ll cancel it for you.

Hi Rachel,
Yes, I no longer want the domain. If you can cancel for me, that would be great. 2 questions though: how long does it generally take and will I be charged again if I want a new one? Sorry, I just no longer want that name. Thanks for your help!

Hi Marcus,
Sure thing, I cancelled the domain artofanthony.com for you. You can continue to use your site at its free WordPress.com address if you’d like: http://artofanthony.wordpress.com/
The domain is cancelled, so that’s all done, but it can take some time for the domain registrar to process that cancellation. (There’s not an exact time for that process.) There’s also no guarantee that the domain will be released again when it’s done.
If you want a new domain name, you will need to register and pay for that separately: Register a New Domain

Awesome, thank you Rachel.
One last silly question – will the name be available to someone else if they’re interested over time? I have a friend who may take it over

@mranthony1020
If you are referring to a deleted .wordpress.com blog URL then the answer to that question is no. Recovering or registering any deleted blog URL is not possible. Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.

Thanks Rachel. I’m actually refering to simply the “artofanthony.com” name (without the .wordpress extension).

Hi Marcus,
There’s no guarantee the domain name artofanthony.com will be released so your friend can register it. I’d recommend keeping an eye on the domain’s WHOIS status to see if and when it becomes available:
