Delete existing categories
-
How can I delete an existing category? I want to add a category of ‘Work’ but there’s an existing category of ‘work’ (with lower case ‘w’). Because of this, WordPress won’t let me add category of ‘Work’, and I can’t seem to delete the existing ‘work’ category.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

tinaparkblog.com is hosted by GoDaddy.com, not by wordpress.com. You are posting to the wrong support forum.
We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
(1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
(2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.com/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.
Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpackHowever, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
As you are referring to a site that is not hosted here, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

Hi timethief, thanks – I didn’t realise there were different forums for wordpress.com vs wordpress.org.
Regardless, although my site is currently on wordpress.org, I’m actually looking to move it to wordpress.com. I’ve moved all the content over to wordpress.com, and am trying to tidy everything up before I move my domain over too.
During the tidy-up on wordpress.com, one of the issues that I’ve come across is not being able to delete categories (as above).
Any advice?

I have a ‘temporary’ URL set to tinaparkblogs.wordpress.com, and set to private as I don’t want the blog to be live until I’m happy with all the content and have transferred my tinaparkblog.com domain name over.
I’m not sure how your question is relevant to being able to delete categories?
Would appreciate any help, thanks.

Thanks. I verified that URL at https://tinaparkblogs.wordpress.com/
The Admin login link to the dashboard for every blog hosted by wordpress.COM is:
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
* You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.
If the log-in information is lost you need to visit https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
1. To edit or delete a category assigned to a post (whether it’s a draft or has already been published), go to Dashboard → Posts → All Posts in your dashboard, hover over the title and click the Edit link. To delete the post click the Trash link.
For editing post in the new editor see https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#go-back-and-edit-posts
2. To edit/delete categories in your dashboard go to Dashboard → Posts → Categories
https://tinaparkblogs.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category
3. To edit or delete dynamic category pages from your custom menu go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus
https://tinaparkblogs.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php
4. To edit or delete Tags go to https://tinaparkblogs.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag
I’m not sure how your question is relevant to being able to delete categories?
If the URL was not relevant I would not have asked for it. WordPress.COM and wordpress.ORG have separate support docs and I spend many hours answering people who think the two are the same when they are not.

Awesome, thank you so much timethief!
Accessing my blog with ‘/wp-admin/’ added at the end, and managing my categories through that way has totally done the trick :)
Cheers!
