Delete Media Library
-
I’ve used 100% of my Media Library space and want to delete all the older photos. I’m not seeing the delete option when ‘hovering over the image’ in Media Library. I’d like to delete whole months at a time.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. Be aware that if you delete an image from your library it will ALSO disappear from any post or page where you added it. If you’re fine with that, there’s a bulk-delete option.
If you’re in the grid-view of the media library, click on the Bulk Select button and select the images. You’ll have to select them by clicking on each image. Once you select an image the delete button will appear at the top of the screen.
If you’re in list-view it’s a bit faster. There you can filter the images to only show those of a certain month, then bulk-select by clicking the checkbox at the top of the list. Click on Bulk Actions, select delete and confirm.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/deleting-files/If you’re not fine with your images disappearing from old posts, you need to either buy the Premium upgrade so you get more storage space, or you need to replace all you images with smaller ones that take up less space.
If you burned through 3Gig of storage in one year then you’re using images that are much larger than they need to be. Any image you upload that’s more than 1200 pixels wide is just wasting space, as most themes can’t display images any bigger than that. In future, make sure you resize your images BEFORE you upload them to the library.
NOTE: resizing the images in the media library will not work. To free up storage space by resizing images you’ll need to download each image in turn, resize it offline (Picasa’s export function works great for this), re-upload and replace it in the original post, and then delete the old (big) image. There is no automatic way to do this, and will take a lot of time, but it’s the only free way to get more space without deleting images completely.

Wow, I had no idea that deleting images from the media library would delete them from my post. Thank you so much for your reply. I ended up buying the Premium package for more space. And, I have been shooting high res photos. I’ve since changed that on my camera which should help my situation a bit. Thanks again for your most helpful response.

You’re very welcome.
Just one more thing: besides resizing your images before uploading them, you can also use a service like http://www.jpegmini.com/ that reduces the file size without reducing image size or quality. The free version works fine if you have want to optimise a few images a day, but the full version is not that expensive either.

Oh, and one more: you know you can also insert images hosted on Flickr, Google Photos, Clouddrive, etc? You do that via the Insert via URL option when you click the Add Media button.
I’m done now :)
