Delete out of date website I don't own

  • Unknown's avatar

    Recently I’ve been helping a church update their website. The problem is they still have an old website on wordpress.com that they don’t have access to. Their old pastors seem to have no memory of it, nor is there access to the email account that I would assume is affiliated to it.

    I can provide whatever proof is needed that the church no longer wants the old site and wants the new site, but I have no idea where to go. It would be great if I could set the old site to forward to the new one.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

  • Hi there,

    What is the address of the old site? We cannot delete the site under any circumstances without proof that the verified owner is asking for it, and we can only accept a few very specific pieces of information to verify ownership, but if I know the site’s address I can take a look at what might be possible.

    You can find information on our account recovery process and the information we require for verification here:

    This is the url of the website: https://salamancahouseofprayer.wordpress.com/

    As you can see it hasn’t been touched in years. Additionally, while I am doing work for the new website on behalf of this church, they don’t have any knowledge of who set this site up.

    I can provide whatever proof you need to prove I am working on behalf of the church, but the email affiliated with this is not in use by the church.

  • I can tell you that the site belongs to the username, houseofprayer1. You can try adding that username in the password reset form. If anyone at the church still has access to the correct email address, that will send them a password reset link they can use to regain access to the account.

    Barring that, the only way to regain access and delete the site is via the account recovery process I linked to above. We do not take sites offline because they are inactive, and we cannot under any circumstances give you access to an account if you cannot verify that you are the owner of that account. Employment status at a particular organisation cannot serve as verification that you should be able to access an account created by a specific individual.

    I understand the security measures, just looking for any way possible. As I said, someone created the email account and website.

    What if I can get you in touch with the “owner(s)” of the church directly? Would this allow for the change?

    Kokkieh I am having the same problem. Here is our site, can you look and tell me who the username is? That would actually be quite helpful for us as we’re a large corporation.

    However there is a big change that the person who started it, is no longer working here but a username would get us started. Thank you!

    They will still need to be able to provide the verification info we require on that form. WordPress.com sites are created by individuals, not organisations, and a site containing information on a particular organisation does not give the organisation an ownership claim on the site unless they can verify it.

    @trailmomma

    That site has been deleted by the user who owns it, so there is no way to access that site any more.
