    Hello. I wish to delete a site associated with my college. I have no information on who set it up and no login details. The site hasn’t been updated since 2013 so clearly serves no purpose. Any assistance gratefully received.

    Hi There,

    you cannot delete a site site up by someone else. You have to be the owner of the site in order to delete it.

    Thanks

    Thank you Adarshhalan. Are you saying there is nothing that i can do about this website? The users who set it up are long gone, and I have no information to work with. No Transaction ID, No 2FA auth…but the website still exists. Surely someone at WordPress can assist me here?

    Hi there @sfletcherrcogorguk as @adarshhalan mentioned, it’s not possible to delete a WPcom website that was set up by someone else. Unless you have the information requested in the account recovery form, it won’t be possible to recover that account. WPcom has a strict policy in place to protect users from third parties who might try to use our support system to gain access to other users’ accounts.

    @adarshhalan
    , just for the future, it’s better to wait and tag for Staff after the user has provided the requested information, in this case the URL of the website.

    @justjennifer thank you for taking the time to respond. I completely understand the need for strict policies, however there are always exceptions. This website hosted in the my college’s name has not been updated in 7 years and appears in google searches. It is not good for our web presence. We have no records pertaining to this website creation. The creator is long gone and with that the knowledge. I have tried numerous email accounts that may have been relevant but with no luck. I’m desperate to get this website removed from the internet. There must be another way of dealing with this?

    Hello again, You still haven’t provided the URL of the website you need help with so we can determine where it is hosted.

    Just to clarify, WPcom (where we are ) and WP are separate entities with different documentation and support forums. More information about these differences can be found here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

    If the website is hosted here on WPcom, which we still do not know, it can only be deleted by the site owner account. If you do not have the log-in details or cannot provide the information required to recover that account, it won’t be possible to delete the site. I apologize for repeating myself.

    Also keep in mind that a website that hasn’t been updated since 2013 will drop in search engine returns if you are creating a new website and posting regularly to it. If that isn’t the case, you might approach each search engines directly to request that the old site be removed. Each search engine has their own process on this.

    @justjennifer. No apology required. I understand the situation from your side.

    The url is http://rcogintranet.wordpress.com.

    Whilst I acknowledge your company process, there has to be a way to get this resolved. I have done everything to retrieve the information you need to give me access but it simply doesn’t exist within the college. Information held on this website is wildly out of date and it needs to be taken down.
    Any further assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    @sfletcher2020 one trick you might try: add a comment to the site saying who you are, asking the site owner to get in touch with you about taking the site down. In most cases, they’ll get the comment notification and, assuming they know who you are, they’ll get things taken care of. Someone has likely simply forgotten about the account.

    Otherwise, your best bet in this case would be to reach out directly via passwordhelp@wordpress.com — explain every detail you can including the site name, of course, as well as any proof you have that you are associated with that site. The account recovery team will work with you privately from there.

    @supernovia thank you for commenting. I will try your two suggestions.
