Delete Space After Deleting Sidebar

    I am trying to remove the space left after I deleted the right side bar on my website.

    First, I tried Appearances > Widgets > and deleting the contents from all of the boxes related to the right sidebar. The website took it upon itself to instead add inactive links for Admin logins, etc. – which defeated the purpose and made it look ugly.

    Next, I went to Appearances > Customize > Additional CSS and added the code:

    secondary{display: none}

    That step removed all of the text from the right sidebar area of the pages.

    BUT the (now-empty) sidebar area still exists and the contents of my page are still squashed over to the left side of the pages. One of the main reasons for removing the sidebar was so that we could use the full width of the page for its contents.

    Please could someone tell me how to remove this empty space so that my contents can fill the page?

    Other information:

    I am working for a nonprofit and we cannot afford to upgrade to a paid theme/plan

    The site seems to ‘think’ that there is no right sidebar – i.e. in appearances now it is ‘offering’ for me to add a sidebar

    I think I might need to edit the theme file (?) but all of the help pages say ‘make a child page first’ but none of them offer helpful ‘help’ on how to do so (e.g. ‘first make a file’ but don’t say how or where to make such a file) – so if I need to make a child and edit the theme file, please also give me step-by-step directions or direct me somewhere with instructions with details on steps such as telling me how and where to make the file rather than just to make one.

    THANK YOU!

    Hi,

    Your website is hosted using WordPress at a different host <Vancouver Community Network, I guess>. The site is not hosted at wordpress.com

    This forum is only for the sites hosted at wordpress.com

    You can reach the WordPress.org forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    Since you need theme-related help, you can post your query directly in their forum at https://wordpress.org/support/theme/accelerate/
