Automattic Inc. https://automattic.com/ owns WordPress.com and other products like Akismet and VaultPress, etc. Please take note of the fact that everyone self-hosting a wordpress.ORG site using any Automatic products like Akismet, Jetpack plugins, etc. has to have an active wordpress.COM account.

Thank you for your response. However, my .org account was set up through BlueHost, so if I understood them correctly, I do not need a .com account. Is that correct? If so, I really want to delete the .com account.

No that is not correct. Read what I said above again, please. Then read this https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/
If you want to delete this site https://nogreaterpurpose2014.wordpress.com/ then I already provided instructions for doing that. To delete a WordPress.COM hosted blog you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to navigate to Dashboard > Tools > Delete Site. The guide is here http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/
Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made except for the one stated here http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/
Alternatively, to change blog visibility to Private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings
