  I deleted an old blog of mine, but the domain name is still not available. When I try to visit that domain it says “blog has been deleted by author.” Shouldn’t the domain name be available now?

  I’m sorry but that is not possible. It takes surpassing 3 warnings that blog deletion is irreversible and clicking a confirmation link in an email to delete a blog for good reason ie. deleted blog URLs are not recycled.

  You can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

  Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.
