Deleted blog subdomains never available?

I am trying to come up with a new blog name but am having a heck of a time! (Not surprising, really…) What I’ve noticed is just about every single idea I’ve tried gets returned as either a ‘reserved name’ or it’s taken by squatters (set up default blog but absolutely no activity). One that I really like, however, was actually deleted by its own and so it isn’t retrievable — yet I still can’t use the name.

Does WordPress.com never release their subdomains back into the wild, even after blogs are deleted by their original owners?

Reserved means someone created a username but not a blog for that particular name, and in those cases the URL with that name is reserved for them. There are also a handful of blog URLs that staff have reserved for wordpress.COM use.

WordPress.COM does not at this time recycle blog names, and if you think about it, this is actually a good thing. Let’s say for example that you had a christian blog here for a while with a good following and then you deleted it and someone comes along and takes that name and turns it into an adult erotica website. People would come along expecting to see your blog and get a really big surprise and thing you had flipped out.

WordPress will also not take blogs away from existing users, even if they never use it. That might change in the future, but for right now that is the way it is. Here is some more information.
