Deleted Domain, but now can’t use it to a different provider

I just deleted my domain, thinking that if I do delete it I will be able to use it somewhere else. WordPress said that if I delete the domain, it will be free and people will be able to use it. But when I tried to use it in a different provider, it says that it’s locked and someone else is using it. I need help. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

When a domain is deleted, it doesn’t immediately become available for registration again. Instead, it often goes through a process that can include a redemption period and then possibly an auction phase, where different parties have the opportunity to bid on and claim the domain.

In this specific case, it seems your domain has entered an auction. This means that others have the opportunity to bid on it until March 12. If the domain is not sold in the auction, there may be a chance for you to recover it.

For future reference, if you’re looking to move a domain to a different provider, the recommended approach is to transfer the domain instead of canceling it. Transferring ensures that you maintain control of the domain throughout the process.

If your domain isn’t sold in the auction, please get back to us after March 12, and we’ll do our best to assist you with the recovery process. For more information about domain expiration and the auction process, you can visit this link: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/#expiry-auction

We understand how important your domain is to you, and we’re here to help in any way we can. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or need further assistance.

If the domain isnt sold after March 12, can I just have it redeemed in a different service provider? Or will I be paying for an additional fee?

    Thanks!

If nobody else purchases the domain, it is indeed possible to acquire it. However, it won’t be available on March 12th. That’s simply the date when the domain exits the auction if it remains unpurchased. Subsequently, it enters the redemption period, the duration of which can vary. During this time, the domain name can still be renewed, but an additional redemption fee is required along with the regular renewal cost. This is a standard practice for domain registrars.

Moreover, we don’t receive a specific date for when the domain will be released back to the public marketplace. Typically, it’s around 80 days after expiration, but this timeline can vary. Additionally, we don’t receive notifications about this process, so you would need to regularly check domain registrars to see if or when the domain becomes available again.

Alternatively, we can assist you in recovering the domain once it exits the auction, but you would need to pay the redemption fee in addition to the standard domain cost.

I hope this explanation clears things up! Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Hello, it’s nearing March 12. If we choose to redeem it now, we would have to pay probably a hundred dollars, right?

If we wait for 80 days, do we have to pay for it too?

In theory, if the domain were to be released from the auction, you would have to pay an $80 redemption fee. However, if it were to exit the redemption phase, you wouldn’t need to pay, but you’d still have to keep an eye on it to grab it before someone else does.

Unfortunately, the domain was purchased by another party during the auction, so it wasn’t released. Now, your options are to wait and see if the current owner allows it to expire next year or to consider selecting a different domain for your website going forward.

Feel free to reach out if you need clarification on anything.
