Deleted Domain Name

  I deleted my domain name for my wordpress.com website today so that I could use it in order to set up a new website on wordpress.org from scratch. However the domain name is now unavailable. What is the best thing to do in order to be able to use the same domain name? Thanks

  Hi 10thsound, I’m glad you got in touch. We’ll need to restore the domain(s) ASAP so you have control over it again. Otherwise you’d need to pay a substantial redemption fee to get it back from the registrar, or wait over a month, or risk losing the name to someone else. The process is very similar to the redemption period with expired domains.

  Please confirm right away which one you want, or whether you want both. Right now there’s no charge since they’re renewed until November.

  Once they’re returned to your account, I’d recommend these steps:

  1. Point it to your new host’s name servers

  2. Transfer the domain using these steps:

  Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

  The pointing takes effect fairly quickly (usually within a day). Transferring takes several days usually, but you won’t be able to update the domain’s name servers mid transfer, so I recommend the other step first. Note your host will likely charge a fee for the transfer, too; that should renew your domain for another year at the same time.
