Deleted domain not available for Square Space move

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, my name is Jaime. For the past three or so years I used WordPress.com for jaimemedranojr.com – a site I built and hosted on WordPress.com for $18/year. Unfortunately my needs grew beyond what WordPress.com was able to offer, and I recently had to make the move to Square Space.

A couple of weeks ago I deleted my WordPress.com account in preparation for the move. However, in the process of signing up for Square Space, I’m being told that my old domain (jaimemedranojr.com) is unavailable for use my Square Space. I made sure to delete the domain on WordPress.com, in order to make sure it would be available.

I use the domain jaimemedranojr.com to host my work, and several longterm and new clients have that domain as my contact, meaning I absolutely cannot sign up with another domain, as that will result in me losing much needed business.

Is there any way at all to properly release the domain jaimemedranojr.com and make it available for use on Square Space? I’ve been a loyal WordPress.com user for over three years, and I still love the platform, I just need a service that can handle more content. I hope this is possible.

Thanks so much in advance for any guidance.

    Best,
    Jaime

    Hi Jaime,
Here is info on how to transfer your domain to another registrar or point it to a new host (like Squarespace):
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/

  • Hi there,

When you cancel a domain, you give up ownership of the domain meaning anyone else can buy it again. It also takes several weeks after a domain is cancelled before the registrar releases it again.

A better option would have been to simply transfer your domain to Squarespace instead of cancelling it. That’s why there was a warning message on the page where you cancelled the domain asking you if you were sure about this, and warning that the cancellation cannot be reversed.

Right now your domain is in what is called the redemption period. This is the final phase after a domain cancellation where the registrar is preparing to release the domain again. But during this time they can also sell the domain at private auction.

You can try to wait out the redemption period, and register the domain with Squarespace when it becomes available again in a few weeks, but you run a very real risk of losing the domain completely should you do this.

The other option is that we try to recover the domain for you, but depending on where in the redemption period your domain is, our registrar might charge a $80 fee for this. Once the domain is restored to our account you can then map it to Squarespace, or transfer it to them completely.

Let me know if you want me to try and recover the domain, and if you’re willing to pay the redemption fee should it be necessary.

Hi, thanks so much for the response. I apologize for misunderstanding the cancellation instructions. If possible would you be able to attempt to recover the domain from the registrar? I’m willing to pay the reception fee if necessary.

Once again thank you so much for the response, and I apologize for my misunderstanding of the cancellation instruction.

  • There’s no need to apologise.

At the moment you don’t have any site in your account. I’ll need you to first create a new free site at this link:
    https://wordpress.com/start/site/

Select a free plan, and a free *.wordpress.com URL.

This is necessary because upgrades need to be attached to a WordPress.com site, or you can’t manage them.

Let me know once you’ve created a new free site, and I can send you a payment link to pay the recovery fee.

    Received, thank you so much!

And I just want to confirm, once I’ve recovered the domain I’ll be able to transfer it completely to Square Space, not map it?

The goal is to just deal with Square Space directly from here on out and not juggle multiple accounts, ie. having to remember and log in to WordPress in a year to renew the domain when it expires, etc.

  • Your domain is already past the 60 day transfer lock period for new domains, so once it’s restored you should be able to transfer it, yes.
