“deleted” files still on server

  • Unknown's avatar

    Greetings all!

I’m using a WordPress blog for a class that I’m teaching, and I’ve uploaded several of my students’ files to a post (mostly Word documents) that I would now like to remove from the blog. I’ve used the browser to delete them, and have gone so far as to delete the entire post, but the images still seem to exist in the filesystem of my blog. For example:

    http://techlit.wordpress.com/files/2006/06/mamoru-multimodal-blog.doc

should not exist, as I’ve gone through the motions of deleting it (as described above).

It is important to me and my students that these files no longer be available on the web, but I can’t find a way to make this happen. Any help you can give is very much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Sarah

The best way to raise this issue is through feedback via your dashboard.

We are (except Podz) mere mortals who can do nothing except suggest the above.

You can also email support @ wordpres.com and ask if they would be kind enough to remove the files for you.

This sounds like it’s going to be a regular problem for you and I suggest that you investigate other file hosting methods that will give you complete control.

    Hope this helps

    Collin

I note that you have stated that you have deleted the Post but I don’t see a mention of using the Browse All menu tab on the file uploader and deleteing it that way. Have you tried that?

techlit: keep in mind that even if you delete the file off of the blog it will still be present in the Google cache, the WayBackMachine archives, etc. It’s pretty much impossible to get something off the internet once it has been public and spidered*.

    * unless of course you have lost your only copy of it, in which case Murphy’s law kicks in and it’s no where to be found.

    Hi all,

Thanks very much for your help. Let’s see:

“I note that you have stated that you have deleted the Post but I don’t see a mention of using the Browse All menu tab on the file uploader and deleteing it that way. Have you tried that?”

Yep, tried that first, and when the file still showed up, that’s when I deleted the post.

“techlit: keep in mind that even if you delete the file off of the blog it will still be present in the Google cache,”

One of my first strategies was to get the file removed from the Google cache, but it turns out that Google’s process for that calls for the webmaster (me) to insert some code in the meta tag of the html. Unfortunately, we don’t have access to the template as WordPress users. This would be a very much appreciated feature, if not for just these sorts of situations.

“You can also email support @ wordpres.com and ask if they would be kind enough to remove the files for you.”

And they were kind enough to do so. :) And now that I know, I’ll upload the files to my other available server space. Knowing is half the battle, and this time I had to learn the “hard” way.

    Thanks again,

    Sarah

You have to contact Google directly and ask them to remove the file from their cache. They’ll ask you to put something in a Post to show that you are in fact the site owner but they’ve done it before.

Either that or just wait for the spider to remove it automatically from cache once they can’t find it enough times.

A suggestion is to add in ‘rel=”noindex”‘ to your links to such files. That should keep them out of Google’s index.

Actually I still can pull up the file from here. I am behind a proxy though.
