Hi,
I’m not fully clear what you lost. Do you mean you deleted the “Home” item on the navigation menu (currently has About Us, How To Join In, etc)?
If that’s the case, in the Menu editor (Appearance->Menus from your Dashboard), you can add a custom link.
For the URL, simply replace the “http://” that’s included with just a slash ( / ) and nothing else. That’ll link to the “root” of your site or http://hertsbranch.wordpress.com
Hope that helps!

To be clear the font page of the blog is here http://hertsbranch.wordpress.com/
Please be sure you fully understand the differences between Pages and Posts. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. To do that create two pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
Front page displays
__ Your latest postsA static page (select below)
Front page:
Posts page:Creating a custom menu means the ready made Home link can be included in it. It means you can choose to include exactly what you want in the custom menu and exclude what you do not want from it.
Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
(1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
(2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update.Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags too will update automatically update with posts.
By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

thank you for your responses, they have helped me to realise that I mi have not worded my query clearly, so I’ll try again:
my navigation bar had a “Home” which was also my front page ( a dynamic page?) and automatically showed recent posts – I have not set up a separate static front page and don’t want one(yet), the top post is a sticky post
I am fairly clear about the difference between pages and posts – my understanding is that I have stupidly deleted the thing that attaches posts to that “home” place on the navigation bar when i deleted “home” from my menu – this is probably because i did not realise that the “Home” on my navigation bar was a dynamic page which was a standard item in my theme/set-up/settings ???
i would like to reinstate the “Home” on my navigation bar which automatically shows posts when selected and when i or visitors first arrive at the blog
also I am clearly a beginner at this and need replies to be in beginner-speak :-)

As kraftbj said above:
Go to your Dashboard
Appearance—>Menus
Choose a menu to edit or add new and give it a name.
For your “Home” page open the links module shown in this picture:
http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/menus-links-module1.png?w=300
Where it says, “http://pinterest etc” change it to just a backslash / .
In the line “link text” type in “Home.”
Add to menu.
Add your other pages.
Save menu.
On top of that page choose the tab “Menu Locations.”
Select your new (or newly edited) menu.
Save changes. Here is the whole wp support article about making custom menus:

You are welcome. I’m happy that you have fixed the problem!
In addition to what krafbj noted, there is this link to assist you when ever you look at the support articles.
This is a sort of dictionary of WordPress.com jargon:

thank you both for your patience and the tips about glossary & lexicon, i will try to get used to the right terms
