Deleted home page more than 30 days ago. Need it back

  • Unknown's avatar

Last month, I was trying to create a static page for my blog to make it look more professional. However, my site views have gone down since I’ve done that, I don’t like the way the static page looks, and I have decided to make my “posts” page my front page again.

However, while I was chatting with customer service during the time that I was making this static page (apparently a fluke that I cannot find access to again), I said that I wanted to give my static page my name rather than “Home,” so he/she said it would be ok to delete “Home.”

Now, I that I am trying to change my “posts” page back to front page. It was easy enough to do, but now there is no tab for it on the front page. So, I can type my site url and my blog shows up, but if I navigate away from the front page, there is no way to get back to it. When I made my “posts” page my front page, the “blog” page I had created for it previously is now empty.

    So, I have several questions:
    1) How do I either get back my “Home” page or create a new one. I have seen via other support pages that Trash empties 30 days after, and this is unfortunately the 31st or 32nd day.
    2) If I am unable to create a new “Home” page, how do I create a tab that will allow me to make my posts page my “front” page but will also allow people to easily navigate to it if they are on one of my other pages?
    3) How do I unpublish the blank “blog” page without deleting it permanently, just in case I need to work with it again someday?
    4) Related to that question, I would also like to consolidate a few of my other pages. Is it possible to unpublish pages and keep them in reserve without deleting them all together?
    5) Is all of this fiddling with my site going to break links and mess up my traffic.

    Thank you for your help

    Hello Carmen,

Before I help you out with your queries, that’s a great blog that you’ve got there. Kudos! :)

It’s quite easy. And you won’t have to add a new page to add the link to your Front page. Your theme uses a Custom Menu, which you can edit. Go to Appearance -> Menus, where you’ll see a list of items in your top menu (‘Carmen Maccain’, ‘Blog’, etc…). There, on your left side, choose ‘Custom Links’, and add your blog’s URL to it, with the title ‘Home’. Once you add the same, it will be appended to the bottom of your menu. You can drag and drop it to the top; once you save the menu, refresh your home page and you’ll find that the ‘Home’ tab is back in your menu. :)

    3) How do I unpublish the blank “blog” page without deleting it permanently, just in case I need to work with it again someday?

Go to ‘Pages’ in your WordPress dashboard, choose your ‘Blog’ page, click ‘Quick Edit’ under it and change its status to ‘Drafts’. You’re done! :) Also, don’t forget to remove it from your ‘Menu’ (in case it is there, that is).

    4) Related to that question, I would also like to consolidate a few of my other pages. Is it possible to unpublish pages and keep them in reserve without deleting them all together?

Same procedure as above. Btw, you can choose multiple posts (by selecting them one by one) and use the ‘Bulk Edit’ option to change the status of multiple pages from ‘published’ to ‘Drafts’.

    5) Is all of this fiddling with my site going to break links and mess up my traffic.

    Absolutely not! :)

    Cheers!

    – Hari.

    Hari,

Thank you so much!! I’ve been able to make all the changes I want, and I’m relieved to know that I haven’t deleted some important part of the architecture of my blog. I’m also pretty excited to have learned more about how to control the menu.

I appreciate your help, and will be more likely to post questions to the forums in the future!
