Deleted media content still on google search
-
I tried to remove a pdf file from my page, but it still shows up in google search results. I want it gone. I also submitted a request to google, but they say it’s still on wordpress.com. What other ways of deleting it am I missing?

To keep things running quickly around here, files are held in multiple caches through a separate system. These caches are usually cleared within 3 days and the files will then become 404 page not found.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Deleting public blogs and/or blog content from them does not remove indexed content from the SERPs (search engine page results). Google and Bing only clear their caches of deleted indexed content that produces a 404 (page not found) every 3 – 6 months. To completely remove an entire page from Google search results after it produces a 404 (page not found):

Hi there,
I’ve made sure that the file is completely deleted from our servers, so if you clear your browser cache that link should no longer work for you.
However, we’re not able to remove cached copies of the file on Google, and other search engines’ servers, as @timethief explained. You’ll need to contact each search engine directly to have the file removed from their respective caches.

Thanks. I had asked google to delete it previously but I was denied, probably because it was not removed from wordpress. Now that that is done, I will request it again.

Resolved. But for the future, will I have to request that a file be “completely deleted?” Or will the wordpress caches delete it after about 3 days no matter what?

We automatically clear any deleted media files from our cache, but it does not happen instantly, and sometimes a file can get stuck. In those cases we can force-delete it from the cache, but in most cases that shouldn’t be necessary.
