Deleted Old Site and Images are Now Missing on New Site

    I recently built a new website. In the process of building it, I exported all of the posts, and imported those posts into the new site. I did not realize it at the time, but the images were not imported, just the code that linked images from the old site into the new site. While I was in dev mode, the images all worked because they were hosted on the old site.

    Now I’ve deleted the old site, and uploaded the new site. Now that the old site is deleted, the images in all the posts broke. The problem of course is that the images were deleted off the server, and all of the links broke in my posts.

    I still have the images saved in a backup, but I’m curious if there is a way to upload the images and have their URLs mapped properly after uploading? Is there a file in my backup that would show me the URL structure for the images on the old site? Is there a way upload and map the URLs relatively easily?

    I can of course manually add the photos, but I am trying to avoid this.

    This way I could simple upload the images, and thus I would not need to edit the Image URLs in every single post.

    Thanks for that! Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com but instead a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org ) but hosted elsewhere.

    We cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. But, I can get you pointed in the right direction.

    If the URL and permalink structure hasn’t changed from the “old” site to the “new” site, you should be able to upload your image directory from the backup via FTP and that should take care of it. If you did change your directory/permalink structure, you may need to use a plugin like Velvet Blue Update URLs to fix the old links to work with the new ones.
