  I deleted my page shuttletoshetland in absolute frustration and in hope I could just start again from scratch. When I try to use this name again it says unavailable, can you please make it available to me again, thanks!

  That’s not possible. Note it takes ignoring several warnings and clicking a verification link in an email to delete a blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/ All those warnings clearly state that the URL will not be recycled and deletion is permanent ie. irreversible. Deleted blog URLs are not recycled http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

  However, you can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

  Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.
