deleted site

I deleted my site borahgraphy.wordpress.com as I was trying to starts anew. However, after deletion, I realised it can’t be the same domain name again. Please help I want to get back the same domain name.

    Hi there,

If you deleted your site less than 30 days ago, you should have an email telling you how to recover it. The WordPress staff will be able to recover it for you, granted that you are using WordPress.com and not WordPress.org (check the difference if you’re not sure: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/).
If not, the site data has unfortunately been permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
You can find out more here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/delete-site/#reverse-a-site-deletion

Instead of deleting your site permantenly, if you want to keep the domain name, delete its content. If you go to Manage > Settings > General and scroll down to Site Tools you can choose to delete your content (which will keep the basic structure of the theme and the domain name but delete everything else).

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi there,

I’ve restored that site to your account.

    @writer0001
, please tag threads like these for staff so we can help.

The OP gave the address they’re trying to get back above, and it’s a WordPress.com site, so the information you provided about WordPress.org is irrelevant here. Also irrelevant are the details about emptying a site, as the site has already been deleted.

Hi @kokkieh, sorry I forgot to tag. The reason why I write about .org is because I’ve never been certain about the difference so I wanted to mention that in case it was true here. As for the emptying site, I suggested that in case the user wanted to remove their content but keep the domain name. As they said: ‘I was trying to start anew’. I’m sorry if I didn’t make that clear :)

  • @writer0001, got it, though in this case they gave a WordPress.com subdomain, so it’s definitely .com – self-hosted sites cannot have a example.wordpress.com address.

As for telling the difference, check if you see the WordPress.com admin bar at the top, the action bar containing the follow button bottom right, and a link or icon in the footer linking to WordPress.com.

On a Business Plan site you might not see any of these, but then you check the domain’s name servers via Whois. In most cases those will be pointed to us.

A .org site won’t show any admin bar or action bar, will either have no footer attribution, or it will say “Powered by WordPress” with a link to WordPress.org, and the name servers for the domain won’t be pointed to us.

    Hope that helps :)

Thank you for explaining @kokkieh. I have tried whois in the past but it was a little confusing, so thanks for explaining other ways to check! ☺️

@writer0001 – there’s also some good tips in the WPcom guide to volunteering, in case you haven’t seen that yet: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-com-volunteers/ :)

Thanks @justjennifer, that’s really helpful too! I have read it a few times and I refer back to it from time to time just to double check.
Please could I ask one final question though (should I start a new thread?) – on the Feedback Thread for the Block Editor, @galois and @musicdoc1 mentioned the Volunteers’ Blog. Please could someone tell me how to access it and what it is? Was @mabelamber correct with the link https://wordpress.com/blog/tag/volunteer/?

  • @writer0001, I have sent you an invite to the site for our forum volunteers :)
