Deleted site still active – why?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone,

I deleted my site a month ago, but it is still active for some reason.

It isn’t showing in my WordPress.com profile, but the site is clearly still there. https://sandwelllibdems.wordpress.com/

I want this site gone. All help very much appreciated.

    Thanks.

How exactly did you go about deleting the site? https://sandwelllibdems.wordpress.com/ isn’t deleted at all. If it was there would be a WordPress.com placeholder page saying so. Are you sure you’re logged in to the correct account? You need to be the owner of a site to delete it at “My Site” “Settings”. (Personally, I find it preferable to just set a site to “private” to avoid that placeholder message showing until the end of time).

Thanks for the reply. It was deleted through My Site settings, and is deleted “this end” … i.e. I have no active sites. This is the text on my My Site screen (with the accompanying graphics of course), and has been like this since I deleted my one and only site – the one in question.

“You don’t have any WordPress sites yet.
Would you like to start one?

    Create Site”

There appears to have been a glitch in deletion… so now what do I do?

In that case, if you’re convinced you’re logged in to the correct account and you went through the correct procedure, then let’s ask staff to do some detective work. I have added modlook for a member of staff to check your account.

    I should probably explain….

Person A set the account up (on Person B’s account) with a view for Person B to run it. It was then abandoned. I have come in (Person C) to get rid of it, as it has been superseded. I am very definitely logged in as Person B, and deleted it from the My Site account of Person B. I’m still logged in that account now, and it has no active sites.

It’s funny how with questions on the forum people only disclose details in stages. It looks like you deleted the site from Person B’s account but you didn’t actually delete the site. Person A owned the site. Had Person B the admin rights to delete the site or do you really need Person A’s details? https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

  • Hi there,

The site, sandwelllibdems.wordpress.com, does not belong to your account. You used to be an editor on that site, but the site owner, @sandwelllibdems, removed you as a user on that site in 2013.

sandwelllibdems is currently the only user on that site, and the only person with the ability to delete it.

Your account’s logs show you did delete a site with the address, daviddeanfisher.wordpress.com, 3 weeks ago, but that was the only site in your account. This account does not currently own any sites.

To the best of my knowledge, the site was set up initially by those two guys (Persons A & B) on this account that I’m using now. I had no idea that it was actually on another account, and this one only had user access. For clarity, I am not daviddeanfisher, I’ve just been granted access to his account to clear this mess up.

So now I have to try and find out who sandwelllibdems is? Or is there a way that WordPress can be asked to delete it because of another reason? For example, it is years old, obsolete, and (albeit innocently) purports to represent our organisation, when it does not?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m afraid we’re back to square one. WordPress.com staff don’t delete sites just because someone may say they are old or obsolete. Organisations don’t own sites, only individuals. The person who creates the site is the person with the power to delete it so you’ll need to track down @sandwelllibdems within your organisation and hope that he/she still has the password to access the site to delete it or set it to private. If he/she has lost the password but still has access to the email address used to set up the site then they can visit the “lost password” page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/passwords/

  • So now I have to try and find out who sandwelllibdems is?

Correct. That user is the owner of the site, and the only admin at present, so only they can delete the site. We cannot delete the site at anyone else’s request.

Apart from the lost password form, you can also find our other account recovery options here:

    Recover Your Account

That’s the only way to gain access to another account if you don’t have the correct login details.

    OK, thanks.

This has been invaluable. At least now I know that the info I was given wasn’t complete… now, with the full picture in place, the site is gone.

It couldn’t have happened if I’d not come here with my incomplete info.

    Thanks.

  • That’s what we’re here for :)

    Glad I could help.
