deleting a site

I set up a new domain name for my blog and made it my primary site. The data from the old site is now visible on the new site. is it safe to delete the original name?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I don’t see any custom domains in your account, only the free sites, https://siblingrhymeryblog.wordpress.com/ and https://siblingrhymery.wordpress.com/

If you’ve transferred your content from the one to the other and you’re sure everything transferred correctly, then it should be safe to delete the old site. However, keep in mind that once a site is deleted there’s no way to get it back. The safer option would be to set the old site to private instead. That way you can use it as a backup for your main blog, or as a test site, and you’ll still have it available should you ever want to use it again in future.

Thank you, that’s really helpful. The content has all transferred to the new site – does that happen automatically or did i ‘instruct’ it?
If I use the original site as back-up, how do I put the same data on both sites?

  • If you changed the site address via the address change tool, your content is moved to the new address automatically.

You can also manually copy content from one site to another by exporting it from the one, and importing it to the other.

Thank you; I will indeed keep it as backup. I originally wanted to use the domain name siblingrhymery.com but this had already been bought by my nephew for a simple website which allows a PayPal link. If we wanted to, could we transfer this domain name to the current blog siblingrhymeryblog.worspress.com? And could we set up a PayPal link? If so we would delete my nephew’s site.

  • You can’t transfer the domain to WordPress.com, but you can connect it here via a process called domain mapping. To do this, you need to first purchase a plan for your site at My Site ->Plans, and then add the domain mapping upgrade. You also need to change the domain’s name servers at the provider where it’s currently registered to point the domain to us.

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

We do allow basic PayPal Buy Now and Donate buttons/links, but only the basic option. If you want to use a button that has drop-down options or a form people must fill out, you won’t be able to use it here on WordPress.com.

    Much appreciation for your help.
So I could use the basic paid plan of £2.50pcm for this? Is there also a charge for the ‘domain mapping upgrade’? The site currently belongs to my nephew so it isn’t a domain I already own, so would we need to change ownership? I clearly know very little about this process so am a bit hesitant to embark on it. Might it be simpler to set up a paid plan and register a new domain, e.g. siblingrhymery.blog?
Have I understood correctly that I could have the basic PayPal option on the free site?

  • You can use the Personal Plan to connect the domain, yes. The mapping upgrade is included in the plan, so there’s no extra charge. There’s only an additional charge if you want to connect two or more domains, in which case you pay for each additional domain after the first one.

Please note the plan is charged for a full year in advance.

The site currently belongs to my nephew so it isn’t a domain I already own, so would we need to change ownership?

The site is not on WordPress.com, correct? So it’s completely separate from the site you have with us. All you’ll be doing is to connect the domain to your site, instead of to your nephew’s current site. You don’t need to actually own the domain, but your nephew will need to log in at his domain provider to point the domain to us, as explained in the link I gave above.

Might it be simpler to set up a paid plan and register a new domain, e.g. siblingrhymery.blog?

That is entirely up to you, but registering a domain directly with us is simpler than connecting it from elsewhere. You can either register a domain, or connect and existing domain with the free domain in the plan.

Have I understood correctly that I could have the basic PayPal option on the free site?

Correct. You can add a PayPal Buy Now button or link to any site on WordPress.com. No upgrade required.

Steep learning curve! If I registered siblingrhymery.blog on the Personal Plan, have I understood correctly that I’d pay for the domain name in addition to the Personal Plan costs?

Alternatively could I set up the Personal Plan with the redirected domain name and not have to pay anything extra?

  • No, you will not pay extra to register that domain on Personal.

All our plans include one free domain, so if you go to My Site ->Plans and add the Personal Plan, if you then go to My Site ->Domains and type in the domain you want to use it will say the domain is free with your plan.

You can either register siblingrhymery.blog for free with your plan, or you can connect/map siblingrhymery.com for free with the plan. The only time there will be additional cost is if you want to do both.
