deleting admin takes out database

I had an experience recently, where upon deleting old admin accounts that included independent contractors that I had hired to do some data entry and other fixes, resulted in large portions of my database being deleted.

There is no notice from WordPress v 5.9.3 that deleting an admin user will delete ALL content previously assigned to them. I didn’t realize that this happened until a student told me that questions were missing from a quiz, and upon investigation, found that half my DB had been deleted. Fortunately, I was able to figure out that the deleted content was from a data entry project I had contracted out, and restored the site from backup.

I do recall on previous WP versions, that when deleting a user, a pop-up asks if I want to attribute their content with another user. I had always assumed this related to user account data, like post comments or subscriptions, not that ALL the content they ever worked on would be deleted.

In the version of WP that I am using (with LearnDash and Buddyboss), the current pop-up notice provides even less information, saying:

“Warning: Deleting a user will also delete the user’s subscriptions. The user’s orders will remain but be reassigned to the ‘Guest’ user.

Do you want to continue to delete this user and any associated subscriptions?”

Is this pop-up generated by WordPress or a plugin? Instead of the content being reassigned to a Guest user, it was totally deleted! Is this the way it’s supposed to work in WP, or is there some misconfiguration?

Anyway, be forewarned that such innocent housecleaning could seriously damage your site. It seems to me that WordPress could do a much better job informing admins of this potential for data loss, and/or ensuring that just bc a user is deleted that the core structure of the DB isn’t also deleted.

  • Hi,

It looks like your site is using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but is hosted with another webhost.

We’re only able to provide support for WordPress websites that are hosted by us here at WordPress.com. For help with a WordPress site hosted elsewhere you’ll need to ask over at the WordPress.org forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Depending on the level of support that is included with your hosting plan, your webhost’s support team may also be able to assist.

If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the open-source WordPress software you can read this article:
