Deleting comments

Is there anything to be done to allow registered members of my blog to delete their comments?

    Thanks.

Only admins can delete comments, I believe.

Hmm, the FAQ says that editors can “moderate” comments. I wonder if that means delete as well.

Editors can delete, change and mark comments as spam.

Trent, where are these settings for the editors? I need the delete option to be one or two clicks away.

Editors, in this case, is a role level. If you as the site admin go to Dashboard -> Users and edit the user in question, you can raise or lower their status. FAQ on the different role levels.

    Hope this helps,

If they are an author, they can view comments in the admin, but cannot edit or delete them. If you make them an editor, they can delete all comments, not just their own. It is kind of a catch 22 on that one. If you feel comfortable with them having lots of control over your blog entries and comments, editor will be ok. Other than that, you have to delete their comments as normal members and authors cannot do that.

The delete option for comments would be available when they login to your blog’s admin aread and then go to:

    ADMIN AREA => Comments

That is the only quick way short of hardcoding the URL to do it:

    /wp-admin/edit-comments.php

As the admin, I know how to establish their status, but how can they delete the comments? In Dashboard there are no settings for that. I logged on as a editor but I don’t see how I can delete my comment.

I just found now… It works as for the admin! I need a shorter way to Delete button! Is there any?

If you have it set to send you an email when a comment is left, it contains a link to the delete function. Dashboard -> Options -> Discussion -> Check the box labeled “Email me when a comment is left.”

There’s really not a shorter way to get you there as the URL for the delete function is comment specific. It contains the number of the comment within it.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks, drmike. I counted three clicks after the log on screen (and quite confusing for somebody that won’t use this part quite often!)…. and I really need something shorter! Also, I don’t need to have control over the comments as I want my blog to function as a self check out/check in.

    Any widgets? Any code changes?

  • Unknown's avatar

In terms of deleting comments, I don’t think there is any other way short of what has been suggested I am afraid. There are no widgets that do this and we cannot not make any code changes on hosted blogs here at wordpress.com. There may be a way to do this on the self hosted version of wordpress at wordpress.org, but nothing jumps out at me.

    Sorry about that.

    Ok, thanks everybody.

(My blog is self hosted just in case something “jumps out” at anybody!)

Ah. I didn’t realize that you were not talking about a blog here at wordpress.com. Have you asked over at the forums at wordpress.org?

That of course actually changes everything.

On the 2.x platform, you get the list of your last 10 comments on your dashboard. Click on any of them brings you directly to the edit screen for that comment.

But, as Trent says, you do need to be on teh other site. This is a perfect example of how the softwares are different.
