Deleting Domain
-
I purchased the domain bootiesonthemove.com but recognized I can’t install plug-in’s with a wordpress.com site. I deleted the domain within two days to get my refund but when I enter the domain I’m still directed to my site and cannot register the domain on wordpress.org as it is still taken by wordpress.com
If you could tell me how to free up the domain for future use and permanently remove it from WordPress.com that would be very helpful.
Thanks, Zeppelin

Hi Zeppelin,
It looks like you’re referring to bootiesonthemove.com. That domain is no longer registered at WordPress.com. When you cancel a domain immediately after registering it, the domain is sent back to the registrar, but it gets stuck in this limbo period where it isn’t able to be registered again.
Unfortunately, once a domain is cancelled from our side, we have no control over when it is released again for purchase. It usually takes between one to two weeks. It looks like you cancelled the domain on 8/4/14, but you haven’t yet received a refund.
We can proceed forward one of two ways:
- I can issue a full refund to your account. You will then just need to wait until the domain becomes available again for registration, which likely will happen towards the middle of August.
- I can contact the registrar and see if I can get the domain returned to your account. If I’m successful, I won’t issue a refund, but I will show you how you can use this domain with a self-hosted site while it’s registered at WordPress.com by changing the name servers.
If I’m unsuccessful, I will refund the $26, and you’ll need to proceed with option #1.
Let me know how you would like to move forward!

Jeremy,
Thanks for such a quick response. Is there any way that I can get a notification when the domain becomes available? If not, I’d like to move forward sooner rather than later with setting up the new site. If you could show me how to use the domain with a wordpress.org site that be extremely helpful.
Thanks,
Zeppelin

Hi Zeppelin,
There isn’t really a notification method for when a domain becomes available for registration. You would just need to check the public record like this:
http://www.who.is/whois/bootiesonthemove.com
When it reads “Available” up top, you should be good to go.
If not, I’d like to move forward sooner rather than later with setting up the new site. If you could show me how to use the domain with a wordpress.org site that be extremely helpful.
This would involve me reaching out to the registrar and restoring the domain to your WordPress.com account. Then, you would need to leave it registered with WordPress.com for 60 days. You could still use it within those 60 days with your self-hosted site. After 60 days, you could transfer it to another registrar.
Could you reply back to confirm you would like me to attempt to restore it to your account?

Hey Jeremy,
It is still showing that the domain bootiesonthemove.com is unavailable. Because I’ve been billed already, I understand my only option for getting the bootiesonthemove.com domain to a wordpress.org site to be the second option you offered me:“I can contact the registrar and see if I can get the domain returned to your account. If I’m successful, I won’t issue a refund, but I will show you how you can use this domain with a self-hosted site while it’s registered at WordPress.com by changing the name servers.”
Let me know if that’s still an option so hopefully I can move forward with getting the site active today.
Thanks again!

Hi Zeppelin!
I’ll reach out today and let you know if I’m successful. If not, I’ll refund the cost of the domain.

Hi Zeppelin,
I just wanted to let you know I was able to successfully restore the domain to your account. You should see it on your My Upgrades page here:
https://bootiesonthemove.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades
If you would like to point the domain to your self-hosted site, you can change the name servers as described here:
After the 60 day window from original registration has passed, you can transfer it to another registrar following the instructions here:
Please let me know if you need anything else!
