Deleting Duplicate / Unwanted Widgets

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having issues deleting duplicate and unwanted widgets on my blog. Specifically, I have two sidebars. They should have the following widgets:

    Middle Sidebar: Categories
Righthand Sidebar: Pages, Blog Stats, Text Box, Twitter

These widgets appear correctly when you simply go to my homepage: http://whoshiring.wordpress.com/.

However, if you click on one of my pages, such as the “About Me” page (http://whoshiring.wordpress.com/about/), the Middle Sidebar does not maintain the Categories widget. Instead, it changes to have the Pages (duplicate) and Archives (unwanted) widgets. I want the Sidebars to appear identical on my separate Pages as they do on my homepage. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you!

That is odd. It might just be an anomaly with your site, but if you’re using the CSS upgrade there might be an error in your coding… a friend had a similar (but not exact) problem with her pages a month ago and the support staff cleaned it up for her.

    Contact

They generally respond quickly, but this being a national holiday in most countries it might take until Tuesday.

Ok great, thanks for taking a look. I will follow up with the support staff.

@rogerma2: No, the answer above is incorrect. You’re using Grid Focus, and that theme has three sidebars: “Primary – Index” (middle column in front page), “Primary – Post” (middle column in individual posts or pages), “Secondary – Shared” (right column). You select each one in Appearance>Widgets, click “Show”, add the widgets you really want in each one, click Save Changes.

    Hi panos,
I looked at this question with my test blog, and could not figure it out.
    Again, thank you, my friend.

The pages widget seems to act oddly.

How is what I wrote wrong? When someone clicks on his “About Page” the widgets in his middle column change, and even duplicate one of the widgets in the right side column… that’s not supposed to happen, so how is contacting Support not the right thing to do?

Nothing is wrong about what you wrote! It is very odd behavior. Likely contacting support is the right thing to do! But there are a few themes on wp.com that do have odd and quirky behaviors, and if anyone would be able to tell us, our most expert friend panos might be able to tell us if it is normal for that theme. Or not??? I agree, the duplication of pages is odd. But perhaps that is how it’s supposed to work?
At any rate, it’s very strange and your advice to contact support was right.

Panag, your explanation of the three sidebars helped. I did not realize that the middle sidebar was labeled differently for the homepage and the separate pages. I have since selected the “Categories” widget under “Primary-Post”. This allowed me to have the Categories widget in the middle sidebar on the homepage and the separate pages while keeping the righthand sidebar consistent (and as a result, eliminating any duplicate widgets). Thanks for everyone’s help.

Now that the primary problem is solved, can anyone tell me why the font is different on the sidebars on the homepage vs. the separate pages? Can I fix this? Thanks again for your help.

@rogerma2: The font is not different; maybe you need to clear your browser’s cache.

@feartheseeds: As you see, rogerma2 was able to grasp and apply what I wrote. Please test the theme (with its three sidebars) instead of insisting on a wrong reply and inventing rules of your own re what’s “not supposed to happen”.

Grid Focus allows you to have alternative middle column content. To repeat:

Primary/Index = middle column in front page
Primary/Post = middle column in individual posts or pages
    Secondary/Shared = right column

Rogerma2 had added the Pages widget in his “Secondary/Shared” sidebar, but hadn’t edited the “Primary/Post” sidebar. When you haven’t done that, you get the familiar “0 widgets” effect: the default sidebar items, which (in this theme) happen to be Pages and Archives. Those items aren’t widgets: they are artificially created from the underlying files. As I had already written, you get rid of them by adding the widgets you really want.

Panag, I tried clearing my cache, and the side widget font is still different in the homepage vs. the other separate pages. To be clear, this is only an issue when I use Internet Explorer 7. I just tested the site on Firefox, and the fonts were indeed the same on the homepage vs. the other separate pages. Do you have any other idea of what I could try to remedy this IE7 specific issue? If not, I can just drop this issue. Thanks!

Be polite “panaghiotisadam”. If you think I’ve offered incorrect advice please feel free to politely, and without a lecture, let me know where I’ve gone wrong.

@rogerma2: Sorry, can’t help with that – I get identical fonts in IE too.

@feartheseeds: Quite amusing; thanks for the entertainment.
