Deleting Image Doesn’t Clear Space

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I deleted a handful of images because I hit the storage quota, but the space didn’t clear up and is still at 100%. I’m wondering why this is?

    Thanks,
    Andrea

  • Hi there,

Where are you deleting the images from? A post or the media library? You only clear the space when you delete the image from the media library.

    Two things of note:

    1. The amount of free space in your blog may not change for a few minutes, so please be patient.
    2. The amount of space freed may not drop until 500kb of images has been deleted. (1% of the 50mb is 500kb)

  • Hi Andrea, I’m seeing very little usage on the site you linked. Could you link to the affected site?

Noting too: when I first read your post, I understood you to be saying there are spaces left where the deleted images were.

If you have posts with images, and you delete those images, those posts will have a blank space with a broken image. So I’d be careful of what images you delete: make sure you’re not using them on the site.

    The affected site is awdventures.wordpress.com

No, I’m talking about the storage space for images. I seem to have reached the quota for storing images, so when I upload another one, it can’t be uploaded. So, I deleted some of the images that I had previously uploaded, but I still can’t upload new photos.

  • Our logs show you deleted five images from that site about four days ago, with a combined filesize just short of 6MB. You’ll have to delete many, many more images to make any reduction in your available 3GB storage meaningful enough to allow you to upload more images.

Keep in mind that every image you delete from the library will also be deleted from any post or page on your site where that image is being used, so in general we don’t recommend deleting images from the library to free up storage space. Instead you can get additional storage by upgrading to any paid plan.

And if you optimise your images for the web before uploading them, rather than upload full resolution images with big file sizes, you can make that extra storage last much longer:

    Optimize Your Images

Yep, I realized that after I was starting to run out of space, so all my later blog posts have optimized images. Even if 6MB got deleted, shouldn’t it give me some sort of space? I should be able to upload a few compressed images with 6MB, yet my media page still shows I’m at 100% (I deleted another handful of images earlier today as well). It doesn’t seem like if I delete one, I can upload one of the same size…

  • Not necessarily, no, as the storage is not exactly 3Gb and not one byte more, just like a 3Gb USB drive is not exactly 3Gb.

Just in case I’ve forced our system to recalculate your current media storage use, and it shows you’re using 3073.5 Mb/100%, so if I had to estimate I’d say you need to delete at least 100Mb’s worth of images to free up enough space that it will let you upload files again.
