Deleting images from media gallery

    I have a question about deleting images from the media gallery. I currently upload all my photos on WordPress through using the add media button, however, I wanted to delete all of them stored in the media gallery because it was taking too much space. So I used the yourdomain.com/wp-admin/upload.php format to bulk delete the photos.

    Than I went to my website and noticed ALL of the images in my post and featured image header were gone?! Is that supposed to happen because from dealing with this situation of having to resource all my images again to upload into the post. Is there any way to delete old images stored in your media gallery WITHOUT effecting your website.
